Does anyone have any reliable info about the binning process i7 CPUs go through? If I understand things correctly, there's no manufacturing difference in how different i7s are made. After they're made, they're separated into 920s/940s/965s via binning. Logically one would guess that the highest binned ones become 965s, but it occurred to me that since 920s reach 3.2GHz easily, perhaps Intel doesn't need to be very selective, and they just grab the first promising handful they can get hold of from a run of CPUs. That handful is then turned into 940s and 965s, regardless of whether there are better CPUs somewhere else in the run.

They still probably bin them, but most likely the number of higher binned chips exceeds the demand for 965s/Xeons, so some of the high binned chips go down to the 940 and 920 levels.
