I am getting ready to build a new system within 6 months and am wondering if the platform that i7 is built on, (eg. X58, DDR3 mem) will be coming down in price within that timeframe and if there are any other chipsets planned for the i7, I have heard of a rumored P55. Any thoughts or rumors that I should know about?
 
It will come down in price a little in 6 months. Westmere will be out this year and that is when the price will really drop. Currently only X58 and the Nvidia NF200 chipset it out for the i7.

If you are waiting 6 months, go a little longer and just get a 32nm i7 with 6 cores and 12 threads.
 
The current LGA1366 i7 platform is a high-end platform, and I doubt the overall cost will be coming down a significant amount in the near future, since it will remain high-end until it is replaced with the next generation of hardware. However, Intel will be coming out with the i5 platform, which uses a different socket and will be cheaper. That is the platform which will use the P55 chipset, so if you want a cheaper version of Nehalem, chances are that's what you'll have to go with.
 
I just googled i5 intel and got a few benchmarks for lynnfield which scored much lower than an intel i7 920 (granted synthetic benches), so that doesn't look so good for my purposes as I could just as easily get a core 2 quad. Not to derail the chipset and cpu discussion, but what do you think is going to happen to DDR3 prices over the next 6-8 months?

DDR3 prices will go down a lot, probably. They've already gotten a lot cheaper recently.

We dont know price/performance for lynnfield (and westmere, ultimately. westmere with HT turned off looks interesting. Should clock well at 32nm without a shitload of power/heat, while having enough cores not to need HT turned on). Until we do, we really cant tell you which direction is a better option compared to bloomfield.

yea if your ready to build today, order it today. no point in waiting. im waiting because half of the stuff i want for my i7 build is still out of stock. if i buy now i wont have a case to put it on or a power supply to power it :)
 
Yes, if the stuff you want is all in stock, get it, you'll end up waiting forever BUT at the same point, some things might change. I was already to get stuff and then the mobo went out of stock. When it came back in all the 280s dropped in price and I had my eyes set on 260s, but I couldn't beat the 280s price so I actually made out better I think.
 
So, 32nm i7's won't change sockets, right? In other words, I won't have to trash my mobo/memory in 8 months, right?

The fact that DDR3 prices went down is directly related to Intel's introduction of the i7 platform. If you're trying to imply that it has something to do with the economy, then I would have to disagree with that. The price of computer hardware (at least in the US; Canada is a different story due to the exchange rate) has remained fairly constant for quite a few months.

well the 260 was out of stock now its back on, the asus p6t is out of stock now and so is the PSU i wanted :rolleyes:

the Lian li and cpu TRUE cooler is still out of stock though
