A guy by the name of slash_2cpu is running a box with 8 Opteron 8356's (32 cores total) in it for a total PpD of 84,092.

There are already plenty of people running -bigadv units on systems with as many as 32 cores. They're not going to decrease the amount of bonus points because of a 6-core CPU.

Agreed. If anything, Stanford encourages use of the most powerful hardware available. That's one of the main reasons for implementing the bonus system along with the need to have WUs completed on a quick turnaround basis. I wouldn't be surprised if they tweak the bonus calculation to favor such hardware even more in the future. Whether that will be a good or bad thing is open to question, but I wouldn't be surprised if they made it more favorable to 'big iron' rigs.

I wonder tho, what kind of numbers these could hit on BigAdv tho...

Lets just say since there is 50% more cores (real and HT) that we could see at least a 40% decrease in frame time
If thats true, lets say 32min TPF = 26.5k PPD (it does) (i7 @4.0ghz on 'Nix)
even if these bad boys could only hit 25min TPF thats over 40k! (around 25% faster)
And I'm sure if it scales well we could see below 25min TPF
and I know it wont happen but a 16min TPF is 75k lol (just had to put that there because its fun to dream)

At those numbers, I could sell my dual 295's (getting 31k PPD overclocked) and make 600-700$ and buy one of these and make 33% more points at a fraction of the power draw

Sustainability wise thats a much wiser option, one of these could replace a GPU folding rig and match the points at a much lower draw

Im pretty sure these chips are going to overclock very well. just a guess? 50% more power with the lower heat output 95watts vs 130w of the current 4core i-7 but with a bigger contact area to the heat speader. 32nm is 30% smaller + 50% die area. its only 5% bigger. if my thinking is correct should run cooler by a fair amount. if only AMD could stick a knife in intels side just a little

Keep in mind this is not a cost per performance discussion. I'm thinking a single or dual cpu setup as my main rig with something like 12gig plus on it.

Apollo has spoken and so it is! hehe, but I do agree they have done this in everythign I've been apart of for nearly 2 yrs. I mean It went from single core, to SMP, SMP had a huge points adv, then it went to GPU which again had a 2x points adv, then now its moving toward SMP again with Big Adv. I can only see more goodness from the SMP in the future. I am not upgrading my GPU farm though. I have the 45w processors with 4x GX2's and they hit 36k PPD per machine x 3 and that is my base farm then 2 x 295 as my fun machine, which hits for another 30k (if only I could get the 2nd gpu on the 2nd card to fire 100%) Anyways thus how I shoudl be at 135k + per day now.

I will probably buy a single Fermi GTX 480 when they hit and do a i7 based system for gaming and folding. Depending on timing is when I consider if I want to go dual I7 Quads or dual i7 6core version.
