Hi there everyone , I recently found a local guy who is selling a i7 975 extreme for $600 would it be a good deal for that price and performce I know this cpu new still goes for $900 +? He only used it for about 3 months or so before upgrading to a 980x so he is trying to get rid of it , claims cpu has never been damage and it is as close as new as it can be, I have the money to buy me a 980x at the moment , I don't do any video editing or nothin of that sort , just gaming my current set up is i7 860 @ 4 ghz ht off , gtx 480 x2 sli and x3 24 inch acer 3d rdy monitors , running nvidia surround in most of my games , id say 90% of them bfbc2, l4d,just cause 2 , dod S , Cs S, only one I haven't bothered with surround is crysis. I been looking for a high end cpu so I don't have to worry about upgrading my pc for a while , recently I was gonna grab the 980x from new egg, until I saw the i7 975 for sale for $600. Would it be a worthy upgrade for me cpu wise for a good while or should I just keep my i7 860 for my current set up. Mobo wise I was thinkin of grabbin the msi bing bang trinergy if that matters. Thanks

There comes a point in time when you have spent so much and gained so little. It is a good price point for that cpu but is it worth it, maybe in benchmarks mostly. What you have now is no slouch by all means. The one down side will be buying a new motherboard for sure and trip mem. But you will gain triple mem controller and usb 3.0 and sata 6 is all. If it was me I would spend some mullah on a couple nice ssds first. In all the reviews I have seen in 980x The mem bandwidth is a little less on 6 cores opposed to 4 cores with hyper threading. And for what you have said you do with youre machine it more than often suffices. I would wait for the next incarnations from intel save a little more money then go all out then you can move youre vidcards and ssds if purchased to the newer system. My 2 cents is all 4ghz is 4ghz can you utilize all of the cores I doubt it..and you will also be going from 95w to 130w plus when overclocked

Thanks a lot for your input plumber. ,I forgot to mention I am running a ssd as well , intel x25m 160gb

Keep in mind that the 975 is an LGA1366 CPU, and it will not work in your current motherboard or in the MSI Big Bang Trinergy. You will need an X58 motherboard and preferably a 6GB or 12GB kit of RAM for you to use in triple-channel mode.

Yes zero thanks for poiting that out , I am aware of it , I just happened to have mistaken. The msi bing bang x58 for the other one :D

Just making sure. It would suck for you to buy an expensive CPU and motherboard only to find that they aren't compatible.

Idk... by the time you would "need" to upgrade, itll be tons cheaper ,or the new chipset will be out and be just as fast for a lot less, like the i5 750 being cheaper then the q9650... Unless it makes your life easier, say, if you work in the video editing business... but seeing as how you dont i personally see no use in it at this time.

If you do buy it though, youll have to go with Four Quadro FX 5800 GPUs just because : P
