I just successfully overclocked my I7 960 from the stock 3.2GHz to 4.0GHz. Here are the results the computer idles around 45-50C and while running prime95 for 30min it averaged around 75C and hit a max of 83C. I am new to overclocking and I was wondering is 83C high?

Temps seem high. What are you using for cooling?

What is your BCLk and multiplier set to?

To keep temps low with that CPU seems like it would be best to keep BCLk low as possible and stretch out the high muliplier as much as possible. Also work on keeping voltage as low as possible. If you could keep turbo mode enabled you will be able to enjoy nice high speed clocks when needed and save on energy costs, keep temps lower, and possibly increase the life span of the CPU.

I am using a asetek 550lc with 2 120mm fans. My BClk is is to 160 but the multiplier is 25 and I did not see anywhere to adjust the multiplier.

That is a nice oc for that cpu. Is Turbo mode enabled?

Have you tried lowering your voltage?

Ya I will have to do some more tweaking but I just ran the stock temps(Should have done that first). They are 40C idle and 72C max running prime95 with the BClk at 133 and turbo is enabled. I am going to try and lower the voltage with the overclock and see what I get. Do you think I might need a different cooler?

That cooler looks like a Corsair H50 which is decent. There are better coolers but if you can lower you voltage and maintain stability while lowering temps you may not need another cooler.

See if you can get high 60s and no higher than 77 on all four cores. The cooler the better of course. Since you do have Turbo mode enabled your CPU will rarely ever see the high temps, only when you are stress testing. What kind of thermal paste are you using?

I wouldn't throw in the towel just yet with that cooler but 50-60s would very nice temps for your OC.

I will say with the OC I was only hitting 50-52C while gaming. I am using Tuniq TX-2 thermal paste.

Also any recommendations on a cooling upgrade wouldn't hurt, I will most likely be upgrading once I get the OC stable and how I want it.

Thanks for the advice. I went in and lowered the voltage and now it dropped 13C down to 70C while stress testing and now idles at the same temp as stock clock.
