How much of a performance difference is there? Would the extra 2 cores help with anything other than rendering animation?

Folding and certain games, too. There are a few reasons for a hexcore.

What are your workloads? Some workloads such as video encoding will scale to as many cores as you can throw at them. Some workloads such as most games won't gain anything from the extra cores.

I do modeling in maya, modo, and zbrush. Stuff in photoshop, topogun, that kinda stuff. Almost no rendering.

yeeeaaaahhhh... so i'm just gonna stick with the much cheaper quad core. I don't think I will need to do any nanobiology research or anything

Thanks for the help!

Hmmm, then i might lean towards xeon, because i know zbrush and maya both use multi threading. Not sure about photoshop or modo.

intel s5520hc, 2x E5620's. feel the power.

we have a customer running a 40GB SQL database on it for a medical office. it is not slow :)

I have a 970, and it was worth my money (Sort of). Its quite fast and runs cooler thanks to 32nm, I don't miss my old 950, thought it ran way too hot.

In multithreaded applications the dual 5620s will blow the 980x away.
What makes you say that? I'd expct them to be about the same in highly multithreaded applications In applications with limited or no multithreading i'd expect the 980x to blow the xeons away.

2.4x8=19.2
3.33x6=19.98

12 cores vs 6 cores 24 threads vs 12 threads. thats why. and single threaded apps yes the 980x would win. any multi threaded app the 2 xeons would walk the 980x.

The 5620s are 4 cores / 8 threads. I do not see these blowing away the 980X unless the application can use 10 to 16 threads effectively.
