i7 950 Half off at Amazon

You can get a 920 or 930 for what, $200 at Microcenter that'll OC as well or nearly as well, though...

Thats the new price of the 950.

I'm sick of hearing about dead sockets. It isn't dead, but we know when it will be. If you need a PC now its still a great socket. But if you're upgrading just for upgrade's sake, and can wait, then obviously LGA2011 parts might be worth the wait (but you'll need a new motherboard at least).

Yes the socket will probably not have any more performance updates but it the i7 950 is faster than all processors that AMD sells (including the x6 1090T) now so I believe it still is worth considering.

As far as being dead socket 775 motherboards and CPUs are still being produced. I assume that will end soon though..

Looks like Buy.com is the first of the big online retailers to drop the price of the i7 950. Others will be following suit in the days ahead. Hopefully this will result in 920/930 prices dropping a little as this new pricing puts the 950 pretty much right above the 930 price. Obviously if you live within driving distance of a Microcenter then the best deals are the i5 760 or i7 930.

What the hell is Newegg waiting on? I guess they're trying to sell as many as possible at the $599 level.

It really depends on when the price drop happened. They may be trying to sell off their current inventory of 950 chips, and once they are sold off they will drop the price. Hurray for supply chain management!
