i7 940 - Q9770 - E8500 benchmarks

Well, Nehalem is definitely not this generations Willamette. I was hoping that Intel would fall flat on there face so AMD can have another chance. On the other hand, it doesn't seem much faster then the current Intel Quads (for gaming) so I'll be good with my Kentsfield at 3.4 Ghz a bit longer...phew..
 
And what is the i7 940 going to retail at?

Me thinks my 4.4GHz E8600 will be good to go for a while....
 
Well, I meant normal desktop user tasks, as we've seen from the numbers so far most of us won't see a difference. True enough though, most of us aren't very "normal". :p
 
I can see this new chip as being a rendering guy's answer to life's problems. Talk about some rendering power.....

QX9550- L1 0.9ns L2 4.8ns L3 0.0ns mem 53.1ns
i7 965- L1 1.2ns L2 3.2ns L3 4.2ns mem 29.3ns

L1 is slower, but L3 on the i7 is quicker to access than the L2 on the yorkfield. mem read on the QX? 10.7GB/s. i7? 17.4GB/s. Quicker to access AND faster throughput. (both DDR3-1600 cl7). L1 is 50% faster in throughput, L2 is 50% faster, L3 is 90% as fast as the L2 on the yorkfield.

Bandwidth is NOT going to be a problem with nehalem.
 
And there's still not enough multicore apps to utilize all of that extra performance.

It'd make a nice server chip, though.

I refer to one of the other active nehalem threads. An i7 today is a chip you dont need to upgrade until sandy bridge. Thats one of the things that makes it worth it.

Why would you need to upgrade your mobo before then? What tech is on the horizon? PCI-E v3? No need. v2 has plenty of bandwidth and you can upgrade the GPU seperate if need be. USB3? For what? eSATA has bandwidth for HDDs and nothing else needs the speed. wifi/(multi)Gbit cards will fit in a PCI-E slot just fine. Westmere? Process shrink, minimal gains, and bloomfield has plenty of excess CPU power. What else would require an upgrade? (yes, Im being serious)

And thats teh soul reason why its best to upgrade now. no need to even touch your moboa nd cpu for at least 2 years. like otehr people have said too, no apps and games utilize it yet so this will lasta very long time for games and apps with just the one or two gpu upgrades and maybe more ram btu thats about it.
im planning on getting just 1X3ddr3 sticks for 3gb ram and that will do me fine for a year on untill ddr3 becomes alot cheaper, i'l go 6gb or 12gb tri
 
Those gaming bench's were terrible. I won't be upgrading till my overclocked E8400 becomes the bottleneck. My guess is that's not going to happen for a long time.
 
lol I looked at the half life 2 benchmarks and was like woah 50% increase, but then looked at the numbers and it was 2fps difference haha.

Or untill patches takes advantage of new compilers. ;)
 
Glad its not too much of a jump or I might be jealous since I just put together a new rig ;-)
