i7 930 ...?

Ooookay. Riddle me this: You've been offered a second hand i7 920 D0 for a very reasonable price, but you're also curious about the i7 930 scheduled to drop at the end of February ... what would you do? Snap up the inexpensive D0 or decline the deal and play the wait and see game? I'm inclined to take the 920, but part of me is convinced I should at least wait for someone to put the 930 through it's paces before making a decision. The 920 is affordable, the 930 won't be available second hand any time soon (retail prices ...!) but it might be worth the premium. Thoughts?

I would go with the 920. The 930 doesn't have any real advantages over it other than a higher clock speed, but that will most likely not be worth the extra cost.

This. You really want to pay $100+ for a CPU that won't really have any more OC potential than a 920 DO? Pretty sure I would kick myself if I didn't bite on the 920.

Riddle me this: give me this contact of yours so I can buy it instead... and I'll tell you to wait for the 930 =P

I went with the 920, just got it installed last night. $200 new from Microcenter for a D0 is fine, easily got to 4ghz. Who knows if they will sell the 930s anytime soon at a comparable price, and I sure as hell wouldn't pay the going rate for a 920/930 at other places.

Meh! Doesn't matter. The deal on the 920 fell through due to shipping costs to Canada. If anything, the release of the 930 will drive 920 prices even lower ... which would be alright by me. =) I hope to have my rig set up long before February 28th, though (if I can help it). Thanks for the input.

With what courier? The dude I was dealing with told me it was $10 to ship in the US and $35 to send to Canada.
With USPS, which is the only postal service you should ever have someone use to ship goods to you from the US. And are you talking about the bare CPU, or the entire package? The bare CPU should only cost $3-4 at most to ship, and if it's the whole package, it should still be under $10.

I suggested USPS to avoid brokerage fees. Standard practice. I was told it cost more than $30 to send the CPU and HSF in the original packaging. I wonder what method he used when calculating the shipping cost ...?

Well is the chip you are being offered a known good clocker from a reliable guy? I mean if it clocks good and you trust him, then go for it. If it's some shady guy who could've caused hell on the chip don't get it.

The 930 doesn't even look good. The ES don't clock very well (but then again not many ES do). Some boards/chips like odd multipliers better than even, but the 920 can still be forced in to a 21 multi all the time on most boards. So really I would just get a 920 good overclocker instead of waiting on a 930 which could be a crapshoot for overclocking.

I'm also hesitating between an i7 920 and 930... I want to OC to 3.8 minimum, 4,0 - 4,2 if possible.

I was waiting for the 930 cause i thought it would OC a bit higher, but you guys think there wont be any differences between the 920 and the 930 for the OC capacity ??

The 920 is 20x133 and the 930 is 21x133 ? Is it better/easier to OC with a BULCK of 20 or 21 ?

Thx

I've heard that the i7s prefer even numbered multipliers, but I'm not sure if there's anything to that. Sounds made up. :D

21x will be easier to work with but you can get a 21x multiplier 24/7 on the 920 by enabling Turbo Boost and disabling the thermal management features.

The i7-930 will be replacing the i7-920, so there will probably be some 920 clearance deals when the new chip drops later this month.

I figure Intel might knock $50 tops off the 920. Here in Canada, that'll mean maybe a NIB 920 for $250-$300 before taxes and shipping. Still quite a bit more than a second hand 920 for $220 shipped w/ no taxes.

A 2 pound package costs $9 to send to Canada via USPS First-class Mail: http://ircalc.usps.gov/MailServices.aspx?country=10054&m=6&p=2&o=0

2 pounds was just a random guess, but I'm sure the actual weight will be lower. Perhaps he was calculating postage via Priority Mail.

He was using the 25 dollars more in his pocket method.

Also I wouldn't count on the 920 getting cheaper, when the 930 comes out, the 920 will just not be produced anymore and disappear.

Naw. The seller has never shipped international and went with flat rate medium priority as opposed to by shape/weight. The deal is still pending, I'm hoping we can smooth out the shipping issue.

Do you guys think they still ship 920 C0 these days ??? I'll order from newegg.ca and i really wish they'll send me a D0 :/

What's the likelihood that a 930 would be able to overclock to higher speeds more reliably than a 920 D0?

afaik C0 steppings are virtually gone from the supply chain. I think you have a pretty good chance of getting a D0

Maybe 100-200 mhz more?

The real question is if the potential increase in overclock headroom warrants the increase cost.

You're probably right, which frustrates me since Intel hasn't even announced a sub-$999 six-core chip.

You'll find it'll be the equiv of a 920 D0 with a 21x multi. So depending on your board really. Either way say a modest 211 bclk x 20 multi (if you're lucky) = 4.22GHz vs 21 x 211 (if you're lucky) = 4.43GHz.

Yeah. I'm thinkin' the 930 might come within pissing distance of 4.5GHz with good cooling. Just guessing, maybe it'll release with a theoretical 920 E0 stepping and be totally bonkers. Am I willing to pay $100+ more for an additional 100-300mhz OC? Short answer: NOPE. Would I consider it if it flirted with 5.0GHz? Yes. But I really, REALLY doubt that'll be the case. Intel wants something to compete with the P55 i7 stock, making X58 looks less like a money sink.

This looks like a new strategy of Intel. Instead of producing 920E0, they are changing the model # so that they can keep the price high

Yea i agree on pricing...They will probubly drop the 920 ten or fifteen bucks lower than the 930..Sort of like newegg does on the x58 boards with usb 3.0..They drop the newer version 20 bucks lower than the non usb 3.0 version...buy the 920 used and your set for a while with the fasteset best/fastest chip known to man...coming from a fairly high end amd system this i7 flys..even in everyday tasks i see a difference....

The smart idea is too wait for the 930, or do you want a used proc that is being replaced by the manufacturer?

Ok so 21x is the sweet spot. But is it better to OC with the 920, 21x (turbo on) or with the 930 21x (turbo off). ? Is it better to have a ''real'' 21x without having to use the turbo mode or does it not change anything ?

I don't get why you'd need to use a higher multi. If you're going to go past the big 4 you're being serious and will have a half decent motherbaord right? Most will do well over 200bclk 225 i've had my P6T Deluxe (first revision) up to.

Yes, assuming the used proc performs just shy of the new shiny one, and for a massively reduced price.
