hello,
i have built a new computer and i was not settled with the processor's core frequency, so i wanted a little bit of overclocking.

My system was stable for 2 days,.. and today i had one BSOD and one black screen that needed a restart so far. Both problems in games. BSOD in jedi outcast and black screen in GTA4.

Here are my specs:

Core i7 920 @2.66 GHz
MSI x58 Pro-e motherboard
6 GB RAM - Kingston 1333Mhz - 7-7-7-20
MSI HD 5970
750W Fortron PSU
Win 7 Ultimate x64

Here are the BIOS data:

multiplier: 20x
base-clock: 175
adjusted core frequnecy: 3500
Memory latency: 8-8-8-24
Memory ratio: 4
Adjusted Dram frequency: 2800
Cpu voltage: +0,150
Cpu Vcore: 1,392
CPU Pll voltage: 1,86
QPI voltage: 1,25
Dram voltage 1,68

HT is enabled and turbo is disabled. I am not looking for very high frequency i am looking for a 100% stable system. More weird I had run Intelburn test 2 days ago and it passed perfect with 10 runs. I am grateful for any kind of advice.. thank you

EDIT: i have enabled the turbo in order to get multiplier 21x ... many people on forums said it solved their problems so i will give it a try and we will see...

Some i7s have trouble with an even multiplier (ie x20)

Try x19 or x21....

You may also need more CPU VTT voltage or QPI voltage.

You might also try running more than 10 IBT passes. Do something like 100 with max memory

ok,... i have enabled turbo and got 21 multiplier,... since that no problems,.. everything went smooth,... when in games where it got stuck and BSOD at the same spot, it now runs great...


BUT

today, out of nowhere BSOD while watching a HD movie.. i think it is in the voltages... compared to the readings in my first post.. how much do you think i should increase the qpi and core voltages? thanks for answer
 
I would personally run Intel Burn Test or LinX around 100 times with all available memory. Then I would run Prime95 blend, small fft, and large fft for about 12 hours each to test for stability. This is going to be the best way to test for stability. It may take a while, but there is no other way to test for maximum stability besides running these torture tests for long periods of time.

Your vCore seems a little high, unless its a C0 stepping. Other than that, you may need to up your QPI/DRAM voltage (not really sure what this is referred to on your board) to stabilize your RAM.

You may also need to give a bit more voltage to ICH/IOH core voltages
 
You should definitely burn in your computer at stock speeds before you try overclocking. If you don't, you won't be easily able to identify any hardware problems. For example, if your RAM isn't stable at its stock speeds, it sure as hell won't be stable OC'ed, and then you'll waste a lot of time trying to stabilize an OC that will always be flaky.

Just my 2 cents.
 
i am loosing the battle here...

currently running at 3,5 GHz stable so far, but the CPU temps at idle are above 40 degrees celsius... that a lot for idle,... i was checking the artic cooling fan yesterday and found out that it was not all tied up so i fixed it and yesterdy the temperatures were about 35 degrees. Now it's over 46 at average.

Cpu-z states that Core voltage is somewhere between 1,120 to 1,440V (it changes)

i am gonna check the fan again, but i don't think that will be the problem.

EDIT: so far verything is ok,.... but i am don't feel really safe now.... if anything goes wrong i will put everything in BIOS to default and continue my progress form solid states
