According to general benchmarks it shows the 2400 as being a bit faster, but i'm guessing that doesn't account for the 920's overclocking ability. I'm wondering is a 2400 will be better than even a really light OC on the 920 like 3.6-3.8ghz.

What do you guys think?

I think the difference isn't that big. You can't overclock that i5 so the 920 would get the edge if you overclocked it maybe.

If I were buying mew, I'd get the i5. If I already owned a 920, I'd wait for Ivy Bridge.

but 3.8 is really easy on even air cooling -.-

the reason i ask is because i'm acquiring a 2400 build through a trade and i currently have a 920 build. wondering which i should use for my main. sounds like the 2400 though.

Why do so many people say you can't overclock the i5 2400? This is the [H]ardForum and yet so few people know this. You can overclock it, it's just limited to how much you can and I think the i5 2400 can be overclocked to 3.99GHz. Heck, just by increasing the mulitiplier on the 2400 (which again is not locked, just limited) you can have all four cores at 3.8GHz within seconds. You just need a P67 or Z68 motherboard.

Here are the settings in case anybody wants to overclock the 2400 to it's max of 3.99GHz (it's in the chart on the page):

Might suggest you go for that SB depending on the mobo chipset. If it's P67 or Z68, do it just because you can drop in a better SB or IB later on.

I built an i5-2400 system for my mom, its very smooth, runs extremely cool and very quiet. I think having an available upgrade path is worth it. Not to mention after you upgrade, less than $100 and some extra parts and you can have the 2400 running with onboard graphics pretty easily

So if you can overclock the i5 2400 then im assuming u can also overclock an i7 2600?

Yes. All non K can have their multipliers increased by 5 points.

So 2600 non-K will run at x39 +1 for turbo so around 4000 Mhz with all 4 cores used. If you oc fsb a little something like 4100-4150

hmm, that sounds like a 2400 OC should be able to stomp the 920 OC then...

Whats the point of getting a limited overclocking chip when you get a 2500K for $30 more allowing overclocks to 4.8 GHz? Thats is why you never see people telling others to get one.

Thats actually news to me. I was under the impression that you could only overclock "non-K" cpu's a couple hundred MHz at most. a 4GHz clock isnt that bad of a deal if youre needing to shave a few bucks off your build.

seems like the 750 comes out on top from those benches
and the 750 is comparable to the 920?

Well yes but if you start at 3,4 then couple Mhz more ends with 4 ,0 ;)

I vote i5 for the speed/temp/efficiency/upgrade path. What a great thread, I learned some new things :)

Thanks for posting that review....Man...makes me happy with getting a SandyBridge....Granted I have the 2600k (the article makes a point that the 2500k is a more logical choice) but I'm happy with it!

Another thing I would point out is that the 2400 @ 4Ghz is not only faster than the 920, it consumes significantly less power and produces less heat. My friend has a 920 @ 4GHz, it's fast, but HOT.
