i7 920 temps in question.

Alright first day with blend test these are my results, I was using Artic Silver 5 for the paste. Stock clock and voltage turbo off.

I felt these temps were kind of high for watercooling.

So I took off my waterblock today and I saw this.

Not complete contact and or the cpu is raised that much. I was pretty sure I hand tighten the bolts like I usually do.

So I applied some more thermal compound on top of the original and used the finger in plastic bag method to spread it, dabbing all over.

I tighten it a lot more then usually but its working fine for now, I will prime95 blend test it tonight and check my temps.

But are these OK temps for buget watercooling?
 
One of the WC pros will have to ask more about your setup to chime in on the temps.

As for the pattern of paste, it's most likely just the way the IHS is shaped (assuming your block is flat). If it bugs you, or you're looking to squeeze every extra degree out of it you can, there's always CPU lapping to consider.

Either way, I wouldn't recommend slapping on too much thermal compound trying to adjust for it.
 
Your idle temps look fine. What were the load temps? The only thing that stands out is the 8*C difference between cores.
 
those i7's are hot, afik 50-70c for load is normal but idk idle and what block are you using?

A little bit of a spread is normal. Mine is about 7.

Not really using a named block, my cooling is in my sig, Bigwater 760i its a budget water cooling bought it for I think $150 complete watercooling kit. It worked great with my X2 4800+ and 5600+.

And unlike what most people would do keep the watercooling in the case I have it outside since the watercooling set cannot fit in my 5.25 spaces.

Updated while I was making and eating my dinner I ran Prime95 Small FFTS, for almost 1 hour, and here is my results.

Well, firstly, I can tell you that any cooling solution, liquid or air, is going to have alot more heat to dissipate with i7. That being said, it's more than likely that you are going to see results quite a bit less desirable with that cooler and this CPU. As for now, you are definitely in safe/norm operating temps, but to be honest, I see similiar temps with the stock i7 intel cooler.

The real test is going to be if and when you decide to overclock. I'd be interested to see what your load temps are with a sustained Linpack or OCCT run with a sizeable overclock (3.6+)

For example the Swiftech GTZ requires a certain orientation when installing it compared to the holding lever. Since I believe the core on the chip actually runs from the lever to the other side and is the longest along the heat spreader that way.

With your water block/paste patter it looks like the block is running opposite of that direction so it is not hitting the full core.


I think you should be in the 50's with water cooling at stock voltage/speed.

After I read that I said maybe that could work, I went and checked my first pics and saw my waterblock was rotated to the other side, I did it without knowing it yesterday =/.

As you see I would try rotating it 90 degrees on the other sides but I can't cause the mounting is mounted that way to the block.

I think I am going to accept my watercooling is really crappy for the i7, maybe if I get a big rad, x3 120mm fan rad, instead of my single 120mm rad.

I currently just have my cpu overclocked ~200mhz (143bsck), just enough to get my ram running at its rated 2000MHz, have turbo off also.
