i7 920 temperature

I built my first HTPC and used a i7 920 processor. I have a cooler mast v8 connected to the i7 920. I was initially concerned as I thought I put too much thermal paste. I did cover the top of the chip but it may be thicker then prescribed.

Anyway, when running core temp it is showing each of the cores at a minium of 42 and maximum of 59. The average is in the high 40's for temperature.

My question is this okay or do I need to take everything apart and redo the thermal paste?

you are ok if that is your max load temp

The highest temp that your CPU can run at without throttling itself down is 100C. You're quite far from that, so you've got nothing to worry about.

Mine idles at 44C for the highest core on the stock HSF.

40 is a solid temp with out water. What paste were you using?

Try running a wPrime to load all cores to their max and see what the temps are then. If they stay under 60, then you're ok.

60C isn't even sweaty for an i7 920. I say if you reach 80C, then you might want to do something about your cooler, but even then it's within Intel's specified tolerances.

I would replace 60 with 80. Its perfectly fine to run an Intel CPU at 75C.
