i7 920 system randomly having power issues

Hey guys,

I built my i7 920 back in November of 2008 with an Antec Quattro 1000 watt PSU and has been running fine since then. I do a full shutdown once a week, but normally goes to Sleep mode whenever I'm away from the computer.

So this morning, as I was clicking my mouse to awake the computer, I realized it was not powering back on. I then turn off the PSU, turn the system back on, and only the case fans and hard drives were powering on... So I thought, possible 12volt going bad on my PSU since the CPU fan is not powering on and the AMD 6970 fan is also not powering on. I tested the system on my Seasonic X750, got the system to fully power on but it wouldn't post.

Did some research, removed the CMOS battery (Asus P6T Deluxe mobo) to do a full clear, popped it back in and it's posting with the old Antec PSU. Hooked it back up, put the system back on sleep..
8 hours later, same thing happened again. I click the power switch, the computer turns on and off, about 2-3 seconds between each transition, and then it eventually stayed on and posted. Bios prompts comes up and the bios got reset again...

So my question is to you guys, is this issue related to a bad CMOS battery or a power supply? I've never owned a motherboard long enough to experience the CMOS battery to actually run out of power. I'm upgrading to ivy bridge at the end of April and selling my system to a friend, so if anything requires a RMA, I would plan on getting it done soon.

Thanks for the help!

I would start with your motherboard. Since the Antec is powering on your system just fine, it seems like you're having a bios corruption problem, or something along those lines.

had the same mobo with the similar issues. I can't tell you a solution because in the end, I replaced both the psu and the motherboard in my main rig. Perhaps, if it is the mobo and you have the parts to make a proper diagnoses you could pursue that endeavor however, in the end I just couldn't figure things out.

I did get a long use out of the equipment so in the end, the excuse to upgrade was great. The psu was a coolermaster 1000w version that is still being used in a lower end machine.

I had replaced the battery too to no avail.

well damn, i was looking up the warranty on the asus p6t and i'm 5 months over the 3 year coverage.

i'm gonna try and replace the CMOS battery, but i'm not sure how a bad CMOS battery could prevent the computer from booting  i hope it's just one of those odd things you can't explain

so i was using it for a few hours with the antec psu, turned it off for a few minutes and tested a cold boot, computer still doing the on-off-on-off-on-off stuttering..

swapped it out with my x750, reset the cmos via battery, posts fine and boots without any issues from a cold boot.

one thing that i did notice is that i was getting a 11.6v/12v rail with my antec, and a solid 12.2v/12v on the seasonic

guess it's time to deal with Antec RMA
