After installing the stock heatsink that comes with the i7 (and not putting on any thermal paste because I assumed thats what the black stuff on the stock heatsink is) and installing the rest of the parts, I turn the computer on. Everything is working dandy, except after going through the bios and changing a few things and then restarting, I boot up and get a report that the temperature of the CPU is extremely hot. I go into the bios, into the hardware monitor and there it is, listed as 88 degrees Celsius (yes, not fahrenheit).

This is not very suprising to me because I have experienced this before. While waiting for my parts to arrive, I cleaned out, took apart and reinstalled my old computer. After replacing the water cooling system I had with the stock heatsink the P4 2.8ghz came with I turned it on, went into the bios and noticed how hot it was running. Practically the same as my i7 is now.

Intel makes their stock heatsinks so easy to install that I am 99% sure I installed them correctly on both. Then again, the fact that its doing this on two different computers says differently. I wanted to wait to try reinstalling the heatsinks until after posting this to see if there is something I am forgetting to do, or if Asus motherboards are known to do this, or something..

The motherboard for the i7 is the Asus P6T and the motherboard for the P4 2.8ghz is the Asus p4c-800e deluxe. Neither of the CPUs are overclocked and the temperature in my room is very cool.

I got the i7 working, which is the important thing. It was just a installation issue with the stock heatsink. I am sure its the same case with the P4 cpu, but I will look into it later.

If anyone else is having this problem look here. It is a very long thread on this exact same problem, and the issues with the mount for the i7 cpu and how it can possibly get in the way of the heatsink making full contact with the CPU.
