i7 920 PPD

I am looking at 1902 PPD on a stock i7 920. Atleast that is what FahoMon 2.3.99.1 says. I am running SMP-deino, windows xp 32bit

Does this sound about right?
 
how many smp clients are you running? 8 threads you should be running 4 SMP clients..
 
Yeah make sure you use all 8 threads (if you want to). It should be doing more PPD than that if you use all the cores.

Might want to take a look at this thread: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1383048. Tobit had one up and running for a while and it was doing 9200 PPD. Not sure if the current WUs are still the same or not but I would guess and OC'ed i7 should do 8 - 10K+. ;)

instead of using the SMP-deino thing I just went and downloaded the basic console and run 4 instances of it.

Made 4 different folders and run each one individually. Fahmon says each one is doing about 2800 PPD :-/.
 
if your using the basic console client then you need to run 8 clients to use all 8 threads on the i7.. plus you get less ppd.. use the SMP client.. run 4 instances of it.. it will cover all 8 threads and you will get the most PPD/performance that way..
 
I had trouble getting that client to work correctly with more than 1 running :-/.

One thing I noticed was there was 4 threads running when only one SMP client was running so I am assuming I would only need to launch 2.

You may want to try using VM Player and notfred's. I'm currently running 8 VM instances to cover all 8 Cores (Physical & Virtual) from which I am getting close to 13K PpD just from the CPU.
 
Currently OC'd to 3.89. Under water so temps are good.

I really don't want to VMWare all of that stuff.
 
There are two different CPU clients.

Standard - can be installed an almost anything and get a basic ppd amount.

SMP - Gets a large ppd boost because of the complex WU that it can work on.

The normal way of fixing them up is to run one SMP client for every 2 cores you have.

You can get an extra boost by running VMs and the linux version of the SMP. The Linux version has a core that is not stable under windows that is VERY fast and can gain even more ppd.

Take it to what ever lvl you want.

If you NEVER want to mess with it install the standard client.
If you want to do just a bit of babysitting run 2 (or 4) SMP clients in windows
If you want tog et the most, go VM and notfreds
 
That is what I don't understand, I run through the tutorial to set up one copy of the SMP client. I tried running through the configuration again in a different folder to set up another SMP client but it just made my other one fail (I set it up under a different ID).
 
You guys are doing something that is jacked up because not a single one of my machines are getting over 400PPD for the CPU. I have two machines getting 5kish with the video cards but other than that the CPUs are getting shit.

This being on an i7, E6600, E2190, 2.4Ghz MBP and a 3.0Ghz P4. NONE of them will get more than 500PPD and most of them say they are getting 200ish.

If you're not running the SMP client, then those numbers are about in-line for the regular single threaded console client.

I was running 4 instances of the regular console client on an i7 920 @ 3.2 and getting 2-500 ppd per client. Switched to Linux VM's and have 3 running right now. No info in PPD since I really don't know enough about Linux to set everything up (network stuff), but they complete their runs in 1 day or so. Since the SMP units are worth 1900+ pts, thats around 6000 ppd from these 3 instances.



 
I have tried setting up multiple smp clients but doesn't seem to like it :-/.
 
There is a guide for multiple SMP installations. It is possible to run 2 (or more), but there are some caveats to doing so.
- If one of the instances crashes, it can (and quite possibly will) take the other instances with it. All work up to that point would be lost.
- If also running GPU2 clients, you'll need a way to force the GPU2 clients to get enough CPU cycles so they don't starve (lower PpD)

This is a guide that was written by one of our own for setting up 2 SMP clients on a Quad. The concept will be the same for an i7 (just 4 SMP clients instead of 2 assuming hyperthreading is turned on). Take a looksy. In addition on how to set up multiple iterations of the SMP client, it does include a discusson on the pitfalls of doing so.

I will add that from my own experiences running two or more SMP clients can be problematic. A lot of folks have gone with some sort of VM to avoid Windows multiple SMP problems. There are several good guides here.
 
Windows SMP client is, in my experience, very hit and miss. For me, it hated running on the i7. It would crunch 1 or 2 WU's and then hang. I've got it running on a 9450 and it's been up and running stable (knock on wood) for a couple of weeks now. The Linux VM's are tons more stable and require alot less babysitting. As far as I've seen, the standard console client will never net you more that a couple hundred PPD per client. Of course, all of the CPU clients (at least right now) pale in comparison to the GPU clients...
 
well I was just trying to avoid the overhead with the VMwares but it looks like the opposite.

Is there a guide to set up the VMware clients or is it just a matter of starting X instances of VMware and running a copy of linux client on the VMware.
