i7 920 Overclocking Help

Hey Guys,

I recently built my first computer with the follow components;

ASUS P6T Deluxe V2

ASUS ENGTX260

CORSAIR 620HX

Intel core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz

2x CORSAIR DOMINATOR 6GB (3 x 2GB)

Western Digital VelociRaptor WD1500HLFS 150GB

Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EADS 1TB

Noctua NH-U12P SE2 120mm SSO CPU Cooler

Everything went together great and has been up and running.

I noticed that my cpu was running at 2.67ghz and my memory at 1071mhz.

Ai Overclock Tuner - Manual
Intel(R) Speedstep(TM) - Disabled
BCLK Frequency - 190
DRAM Frequency - DDR3 - 1523mhz
CPU Voltage - 1.35
DRAM Bus Voltage - 1.66

Now when I put in these settings I can't boot into windows, but if I change the DRAM Bus Voltage to 1.64 I'm able to login to windows and then it crashes.

Now my questions are

Is my problem these BIO settings or is my PSU not powerful enough?

Do I need to upgrade to HX850w or HX1000w PSU to achieve these settings?
 
Well my memory is rated for 1.65V. If you watch the video you see that you can't enter in 1.65 because when you do it changes to 1.66.
 
Did you increase the VTT/QPI voltage to match the CPU voltage? If not that could be the cause of your instability.

Is your RAM rated for 1600 MHz? If it is than 1.64 or 1.66 volts shouldn't make a bit of difference.

Like a previous poster said you should start overclocking in a lower increment. Start at 180 and drop your CPU multiplier down to 19, test for stability. If it passes try the 20 multiplier and again test for stability. Finding the max overclock of a CPU isn't an instant thing and it requires hours if not days of testing.
 
I almost have the exact same build and the corsair hx620 is plenty powerful ( I can get 4.2ghz overclock on my i7 920 ). My corsair dominator voltage is set to 1.66V, corsairs should be ran at 1600mhz.

Change your ram freq to 1600mhz and input your ram timings by hand, you should be able to do 190bclk with a 20x multiplier which would yield a 3.8ghz overclock but you might want to try 180bclk first since you are on air.
 
I have an almost identical build too. My P6T Deluxe is a V1 (V2 is identical except V1 has an additional SAS HDD controller) though and my PSU is a Cooler Master 850W.

I got my bloomfield 920 to stay stable with a 190 BLCK, x20 multiplier, DDR at 1523 MHz, and vCore at 1.26865v (I think I got those last 2 digits right). What BIOS version are you using? I'm not sure if the v1 and v2 P6T Ds share the same BIOS, but I'm running version 1605 from May '09. I just got this OC stable a few days ago and have been folding with all 8 threads maxed out for 3 days so far without error/crash. What are your temps at this voltage? 1.35v is pretty high for me. When I had the above settings except with the vCore set to "Auto", my mobo was giving my CPU 1.43v and my temps were over 100°C, lol. But at the voltage I set, it stays around 70°C while folding with my V8 cooler and a somewhat warm basement.

Just wanted to let you know for comparison. Doesn't mean you'll get the same results as me, but I figure if we have the same parts, you should be somewhat close. Hope this helps.

Oh, and if you're monitoring your CPU temps, DO NOT use that included Asus Probe software that came with the mobo driver CD. It is completely inaccurate and was reading my CPU temp like 10-15°C higher than what they really were. Plus it doesn't give you individual core temps like Realtemp. Use Realtemp!
