i7 860 heat issue

I just put together a new system with an i7. I came home today after working to find it off. I started it again but it's auto shutting it off within 30seconds to 1 minute.

I looked in my Bios and my CPU temp is at 85 degrees. That seems HIGH. I'm using stock HSF and that's in boot up menu on BIOS.

Has anyone else run into this? I think this is why the system is shutting down automatically. The HSF on the CPU is running fine, no blockage, but I did take it on and off like 4 times before getting the system working fine.
 
check the thermal paste? did you look at the voltages? maybe the CPU is running hot because its getting too much voltage. I didn't use my stock HSF so i don't really now how it performs, but im 100% certain that its good enough for Stock speeds and voltage.
 
I had a similar event to what you're describing a while back, though it was with an Abit IP35-e mb. It'd run very well with first, an E6600 C2D, then a Q6600. The moment I switched to the E8500 (45nm). It refused to boot. After continuously cycling the power button, I was finally able to get it to start just long enough to get into the BIOS where I discovered that the processor temp was being reported as 95 degrees. The shutdown temperature was set to 75 degrees...so you guessed it... Shutdown. After making sure the CPU contact was good, I placed a fan blowing into the case, disabled the temp monitoring and never had another issue. I just used a third party temp program. I wouldn't recommend the stock Intel cooler anyway. The heatsink for those things is even smaller than the C2D series. I can't figure out why they did that.
 
When you removed and replaced the heatsink, did you reapply thermal paste? If you didn't, you may not be getting adequate contact from the paste that was pre-applied.

I took off the HSF, wiped off the thermal paste with rubbing alcohol then re-applied some OCZ paste I got from compUSA (only stuff they had). After 2 tries of this, I have a stable processor at around 25-30c idle.

Only concern, was running prime95 for about 45min the CPU got to 70c. That's within normal temps but high enough to concern me about getting a 3rd party CPU fan.

Any ideas?

Personally I would shoot for sub-80 while running prime95, so you are fine. The max safe temp is 99, so 20-30 degrees below that under full load is totally fine for 24/7 operation. Aftermarket heatsinks are never a bad idea though.

Yes I had this issue with my stock intel CPU cooler. That stuttering your describing is the intel thermal throttle kicking it. Eventually it shuts down because you have exceeded its thermal threshold. The solution to this is to purchase a good aftermarket CPU cooler. Those pins on the intel CPU cooler are terrible.

Do you plan on overclocking? If not, then stick with the stock cooler. It's fine.

The push-pin mounting system is perfectly fine if used correctly.
