i7 860 and i7 920 difference?

What is the difference between the i7 860 and the i7 920 when it comes to folding?

Difference that I can see is Socket 1156/1366 and 2.66GHz/2.8GHz.

Does the 920 have more O/C headroom?

Or is it because of the features of the chipset ie. P55/X58 and thriple channel ram vs dual channel?

Triple channel vs. Dual Channel is pretty much the only difference. There is a slight performance edge to triple channel with bigadv. However, I don't believe it is that great but, at the same time, I don't think anyone has really sat down to really do any REAL comparison. I like the 1366 platform so I can upgrade later, if I can afford it, to six and eight core CPUs. As bigadv requires a fair amount of memory, I also prefer the 6GB/12GB approach to memory vs. 4GB/8GB.
 
Also if I'm not wrong there have been issues with the 1156 and OC'ing. I they they are more prone to failure, or something like that. I do know that the general consensus is to got 1336 if you can, it's better in almost every aspect but price.

Well, the original 1156 sockets, made by Foxxconn, were more susceptible to failure during periods of extreme overclocking over long periods of time. Many enthusiast 1156 boards now ship with a heavier duty socket made by Lotes.

Why do you feel that the general consensus is to go with the 1366 / 930 combination as opposed to the 1156 / 860? As mentioned before, we know about the initial OC'ing issues with the older Foxconn socket, but I'm pretty sure that that was quietly resolved. There is the upgrade path to 6 core that will be released under the 1366 socket as well, and I can see that as a reason, but other than that I can't imagine why there would be any major issues with the 860. I know that the two I own and fold bigadv units with are currently rolling around 3.7 GHz with no problems on stock / default voltages.

That being said....(you know there is always a catch)....my next i7 will likely be a 1366 due to the upgrade path to 6 core. ;) That would be the only reason to go that route in my mind right now, though.
 
price wise they are close, you can find mobo's in the same range and CPU's in the same range, so why not go with the better option (future proof and trip chan mem)
 
Things may have changed, but the last time I looked at them, there wasn't very much of a price difference because of how I needed/wanted to configure the memory. On the 1156 platform, 4GB was too little and 8GB was too much memory (based on cost), but 6GB on the 1366 was just about right and left me with a nice upgrade path to 12GB when I needed it. A good 1156 board with 8GB compared to a good 1366 board with 6GB didn't seem to reflect much difference in price. I don't know if it has changed.

However, didn't we have this same conversation a few weeks ago? :rolleyes: :p
 
The only reason to go with 1156 over 1366 IMO is to

  1. Save money by purchasing dual channel ram....which is stupid because you can still do that for 1366 and just run dual channel.
  2. Have a miniITX build

Personally i think the memory bandwith has a larger effect on folding PPD than we actually know about.

I think we could collaborate tho, and compile some numbers and compare clock for clock and get it down to a science. :)

I've been saying this for awhile, mostly to myself, but never really had any hard evidence to back any of it up. :rolleyes:
 
I have both a 860 and a 920

Differences:
1. 920 overclocks to better a degree and has better temperatures when overclocked.
2. The 920 consumes on average 30-40 W then the 860 at stock
3. If you have a microcenter nearby the cost between the 860 and 920 would be negated.
4. You can go either way. The difference between the two platforms is really nothing. If you think you can afford the six core CPU in the future (be ready to spend big money though for it) I would recommend going with the 920. If you're going to have multiple core i7 boxes go with the 860 or mix'em like i did.

The RAM isn't a big deal. 8 gb is more then enough for big adv, and the A3 core will reduce the need for more than 4gb of RAM
 
As of just a few minutes ago I switched my memory speed from 1200 to 1600 same timmings and let hfm.net run through 5 frams i saw no difference at all. my bus speed is 200X19 i5-750 @3.8. under the memory theory this should have a least given me something. correct? p6023 2903 points 4:30 fram times

The upgrade path alone is the main reason to go with the 920. I've been out of the game for a bit, and am working on getting some of my rigs set back up. I want them looking like this soon. :p

i7-860 (3.8GHz) gets 23,043 PPD with 34:27 frame times, running twin GTX-260 GPUs as well on Windows 7 64-bit. Just keeps on cranking along and beating my dual quadcore 2.5ghz Xeon setup (41:48 frame times).

I guess I could've gone with a 920 instead, to have an upgrade path - but then I'd have an orphan processor and no board to run it in if I put a new proc on its board. So really it makes no difference in the grand scheme of things.

Fahmon, that's why i put (without bonus). HFM.net automatically adds in the bonus. With the bonus i'm getting 23.5kppd on the 920 and 20k ppd on the 860. I'm also running video cards on these rigs too.
