Chaps,

Wondering if you can help me out with something. I recently started a new job in a new industry and we do a lot of app and game development stuff. Specifically in the VR and AR realms.

We have a machine here in the office the guys use for Vive and stuff and it's, broadly speaking, as follows:

i7 5820k
16GB RAM
GTX 970

We're looking to simply upgrade to a GTX1080 and be done with. However, is the rest of the machine good enough? To me a 5820k seems plenty so I see no reason to update the CPU / platform in general.

What does [H] think?

Any help appreciated.

I had my 5820k at 4ghz, but I think it should be fine for VR since it's mostly gpu bound.
Even stock should be fine. You could use stock as a baseline and then try with a 4ghz OC and see. Probably no difference really.
I know when I did a little testing the cpu, it only got a little warm according to realtemp. But my 980ti was maxed out on usage and temp was 70's.
A 1080 would be perfect.

Cool, cheers.

The guys didn't wait for feedback and went ahead and bought the 1080 anyway! Sometimes I don't know why I bother!

Since you don't need it anymore can I have the old GTX 970?
