I7 4790 z97 preview

This is a NON-K processor. I have one here, it is NOT Devil's Canyon.

We saw less voltage usage at identical clocks and settings, but this was attributed to voltage leakage on the current part. No BCLK overclocking to speak of, so no real news here.

I'll be dropping in a 4790 K to replace my i3 assuming it'll work on my Z87 board.

If the temps are true with new vs previous, I'm wondering if all of our whining, bitching, pissing, and moaning made Intel decide to go back to solder. I hope so.

If the temps look that good (or better) on the K variant I might just have to break my upgrade cycle and upgrade my machine again instead of the wife's (hey, should would get a real nice 4770K that's already broke in :D ). It's not to say I'm unhappy with my chip, but I know the TIM is holding my chip back as it will hold 4.8 right up until it slams into the thermal wall.

With a chip that comes from the factory properly put together, I could see returns to SB level OC's to go with the IPC increases since then. This would be something I would buy.

Probably just figured out a way to glue the HS to the PCB without causing a gap.

A slight improvement overall but nothing earth shattering is what I was reading into it. Nothing about the other cpus though. I wonder how much more the 4790k will cost?

It's funny, because they've tried to make 10c drop at 100Mhz+ seem earth-shattering. For anyone that delidded it probably isn't even that interesting. I'm actually confused and thrown off somewhat though; I had the idea the improved thermal performance was supposed to come with Devil's Canyon, which is specifically the 3790k and 4790k? So is this cool running 4790 what we're to expect from DC? 10c drop? If we can't delid the thing, and all we get is 10c off Haswell... this is not good news. Maybe DC will be even better?

Maybe this is what we're getting with DC: it's NOT solder--you still have to delid--and people will see 4.7 more often and 4.8 about as often as we're seeing legit stable 4.7 now... which is to say--pretty damn rare. /sigh

Doesn't sound super interesting to me as an upgrade. But we have plenty of [H] folks that will want to make the jump.

I'm gonna make the jump no matter what as long as it's not too expensive. Hell... it's about time I upgrade.

If the k version can clock up to 5.2 on low voltage and keep cool, hell I'm in for one. My sandy bridge cpu's no longer can hold a 4.5 overclock. I'm down to 4.2 at 1.24 volts after being at 4.5 for over two and a half years. I have to admit though this is the longest I've ever held onto a cpu and has served me well. I'm sure haswell refresh won't really be much of an upgrade if any at all for what I do.
