I currently have an i5-750 in an MSI P55-GD80. I was just given an EVGA X79 SLI for free. If I sell my i5/mobo combo I can upgrade to an i7-3820 for a minimal additional investment. Y'all think it would be worth it for the upgrade, especially with a bit of OC, or should I sell the EVGA board as well and wait for the Haswell release or longer?

3820 would be great if you're not having to throw out much cash. If you're near a microcenter they are available for $229. I've had two of them in the past and both easily overclocked to 5.0ghz.

That would give you an upgrade route to IB-E later on when it releases if you feel the need.

Man- wish I had a microcenter anywhere close! That would be almost a free upgrade! At this point, its looking like I can do it for somewhere around $50.

Where are you located at? MC is a few hours from me but my local Fry's will still price match them. For $50 it would be a pretty decent upgrade from the i5-750.

I'm in Arizona, so I can get to a Fry's in Phoenix... might have to see if I can get them to price match :)

My Best Buy price matched for a 3770K to a Microcenter so it is worth a shot. If not I m going to Atlanta Sunday to pick one up for my wife's rig. I d be happy to grab a second if the savings is worth the shipping.

I went from an i5 750 to the i7 3820 as well and honestly had it not been for all the deals at Microcenter and Frys during Black Friday, I would stayed with it.

With that said I went from a modest i5 750 4870X2 setup to an all out i7 3820 7970Xfire setup, so very happy with the performance bump. I dont have to worry about game settings. I just hit Ultra or Ultimate and never look back. :)

Also note the 2011 cpu's don't come with a Heatsink. So check if you can use your current one. If not I bought of one these and it worked great.

If you can get that 3820 completely covered, then why the heck not :)

Haswell won't blow your 3820 out of the water, and upgrading to Haswell is gonna cost you even factoring in the board sale.

thanks everyone- I went for it- found someone to pick one up for me at microcenter and ship it:) Should be shipping tomorrow morning! Looking forward to seeing what kind of OC I can tweak out of it with the EVGA x79 SLI.

I just set my cpu strap to 125 Mhz from 100Mhz and upped my Volt to 1.3V netting me 4.625Ghz. Didn't try to push it past that due to strain on my PSU since I also have 2 X 7970 and a full on Watercooling setup running of the same PSU.

Nice. I'm just running a single 7950 on my Seasonic x650 GOLD, so I should be able to have plenty of headroom for pushing:) I'm gonna be using an Air cooler though (probably an Arctic Freezer i30). Should be interesting to see if I can get it close to 5 GHz.

On it's way. Should be in business by Tuesday evening.

I ramped mine up with the multiplier. Been running at 4.3 at stock voltage. I have been meaning to turn mine up higher, but I am lazy. Busy running errands. Lol

Be sure and leave heat for this. :)

Man, I wish they would deliver it already. It's almost 4pm your time. I'm anxious for you to get it and OC that bish.

Got here safe and sound! Motherboard should be delivered today, and I'll be playing with it all tonight when I get off work :-D

Do you have a wattmeter? Can you post your max frequency at stock voltage, and stock voltage?

I still thinking between Haswell and i7-3820.

I don't have a wattmeter sadly. I will post my OC results. I'll get max frequency at stock voltage, max frequency, etc. :)
