I7 2600K temps high?

I just recently went with a MSI GD65 anf a Noctua d14 and load temps are sitting at 72c max in a 70 degree room. My vcore is 1.336v at max, at 45 multi for 4.5ghz. I have vdroop set to low. Is it normal to have these temps? I have seen it go to 77-78c when I raise the heat to 80 degrees in the home. Please let me know.
 
70 degree room? That's farenheit right? You're confusing me with posting celcius for the load temp
 
P.S. I had mine at 4.5 Ghz wiht 1.33v and I get 72 load temps as well (prime 95 small FFT). Dropped the voltage back to 1.23 and its now 62 or so (1.33v was just the initial test).

And I'm not totally sure my temps are normal either
 
Temps over 65 celsius will end up with more chances of instability unless you have it non-air-cooled, either watercooled or another badass setup.
That said, I'd suggest investing in better cooling if you're still using air and getting those temps. Its not *bad* to have temps that high but you don't wanna do a marathon run of 12-hour gaming sessions too often. You'll also wear out your processor faster with temps that high. Get it to 65 celsius or lower and you'll be much better off.
 
Low 70s are not too bad overall, but it seems a little high for that overclock. You sure you've got good thermal paste application, and good cooler contact? How's the case airflow?
 
Agreed, double check the thermal paste (if you can without breaking anything).
I'd actually recommend that unless you install CPUs for a living, go to your local computer shop and have them remove & reinstall the CPU and cooler and reapply the thermal paste. Have them use their thermal paste or use the remaining paste you may have leftover, but be sure you have enough. Thermal paste brand isn't too big a deal, just as long as its of decent content/quality. They shouldn't charge you more than $35, and if they do then find another place to do it.

Tell us if you've got a water-cooled or liquid-cooled setup. If not, investing in more/better fans or rearranging stuff for better airflow would work well. I got an Antec900 with 4 case fans plus the CPU fan and its a beast and runs super-quiet and cool. :)
I even put all the fans (and CPU fan) on 'High' and 'Turbo', and its still quiet! O_O

Forceman, just wondering , what temps (and what ambients) are you getting with 1.4v?
 
Thank you everyone for the replies. I am pretty sure the contact between the cpu and sink are solid, because I screwed it in as far as it would go, also did the grain of rice in the center. I am using the stock noctua paste that came with the cooler. I have tried lower vcore but get BSOD's after a while in prime and intel burn test, both running at same time. I have also re-seated the heatsink, and went from 82c to 78c max. The cas air flow is nill. I have a storm scout that has no sides on it for now. I dont think its from a loss of fresh air.

I'm actually back down to 1.38 now. I run about 71C on Prime, and around 75 on the new Linx with AVX. I've got a pretty low noise CPU fan, along with low noise case fans, so I could probably do better if I wanted to put up with the noise.

I found it took a little more paste than normal for me to get good coverage with this CPU (not sure if that is because of the CPU or because I switched to MX-4 - probably the switch to MX-4). I ended up making a small plus sign in the center, as opposed to a line like I normally do.
