I'm about to build my rig in a week and have a few things to figure out. It will be based around the ASRock P55M PRO (the ga-p55m-ud2/4 are unavailable in china currently) and the i5-750and I want to push it to 3.8/4.0

What ram should i get? is 1600 fast enough or should i go for 1800
currently looking at: G.skills F3-12800CL9D-4GBNQ 9-9-9-24

next heat sink. do the 1366 heat sinks fit on the 1156 boards?

lastly is thermal compound. I was reading the roundup on this site and read that some should be reaplied every year. I'm not interested in doing that so how do i know which ones need re-applying?

RAM: 1600 is fast enough, you can adjust your memory multiplier
Heatsink: No, the spacing is different. It must say 1156.
Thermal compound: Dunno, I use AS 5 and call it a day.
 
12800 is plenty. You hit the rated speed at 200 BCLK (if you use the 4x RAM multi). So 21 x 200 is already 4200. With the 21x multi, you really only need 190 BLCK anyway, so you will have headroom at anything lower than 4.2Ghz.

You will need a s1156 compatible heatsink, so research what you want in your budget. It's basically 212+ for the $25 range and Megahalem on the higher end. Without HT, I really doubt you will need the beefier heatsinks though.
 
OT: Mav is there any reason why you're using the F2 bios instead of the F3m for your motherboard?
 
any recommendations for coolers? I want to make this an mATX build, so something the can handle the oc but not too huge.
 
I'm looking at the Zalman ZALMAN CNPS9700, will it be sufficient to reach around 3.8-4.2?
