Hello [H] guys and gals. I just got a new i5 setup that I am in the process of OC'n but seem to have run into a snag. I can't seem to get above 3600Mhz stably. Spec...

MB: ASRock P55 EXTREME4 LGA 1156
CPU: Intel Core i5-760 Lynnfield 2.8GHz
RAM: Patriot Viper II 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1600 (7x7x7x20)
GPU: XFX ATI HD5870 1Gb
PSU: Thermaltake 650Watt
Cooler: Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B

System info while running Prime95 and CPU-Z...

I have the core voltage set to 1.350 but as you can see the i5 is only using 1.296 at full load so I don't think voltage is the issue. I think it may have something to do with either the memory controller (which is now on the die I believe) or I may need to OC the memory to get to the magical 4000Mhz OC I am looking for on my i5 (a little more would be nice;)). I was wondering if you guys could make some suggestions or point me in the right direction as to what to try next. I have tried increasing/decreasing the BCLK in little bits but if I go much over 184 things start to get screwy pretty quick. Thanks in advance.

Other possibly helpful info...

OS: Win 7 Ult 64bit

it's showing a vcore 1.29v because of vdroop, but even so you shouldn't need much to reach 4GHz (this is dependent on the individual chip though).

would you mind posting a bios template with all the current settings? it'd make giving suggestion much easier.

I'd suggest giving this giude a good read through before going much further.

(if I had to make any guesses from what you're saying, I'd say you need to raise your vtt)

Thanks. I'll give it a read and try it out.

Hmm... vdroop... maybe my PC needs a little blue pill :p

Also, What is a good tool for creating a BIOS template? Or do I need to take a pic with my camera? Thanks again.

if you do some research into your specific board, some sites/forums that cater to the overclocking community will post blank templates that mirror the bios setting layout. it's pretty much a cut-and-paste document and you have to add your setting in manually.

example;

Code:
[U][B][SIZE="4"]Asus RampageIII Formula[/SIZE][/B][/U][B]
[SIZE="3"]Extreme Tweaker[/SIZE][/B]

Target CPU Frequency
Target Dram Frequency
LN2 Mode
QPI Load Line Calibration

@ Skull_Angel and anyone else that might be interested...

Thanks for the article. Helped a lot. Unfortunately I was only able to get me system to 3420Mhz :(. And my memory is only running at 1360Mhz instead of it's 1600Mhz rating :(. I guess I will have to do some more reading tweaking to get to that magic 4000Mhz and get my ram to it's regular clock. I will post my BIOS settings soon.

Thanks again.

Have you increased QPI voltage? Stock is like 1.1v but 1.35 should be safe. It's the memory controller voltage so it might let you increase that bus speed to 200.

Also your mobo might have something called load line..something. It helps reduce vdroop.

Currently my QPI is set to 1.295 anything over that is considered "overvolted" by my MB. There are several settings I have been wary of bumping up as they are considered "overvolting" on this MB including the CPU V, QPI V, and RAM V. Once my rig has been running for a while as is I might try and bump it up some more. I will try to post that BIOS template after I get home today. Thanks.

Couldn't find a template that fits closer to my BIOS so I used what I could from the one in the thread...

3.6ghz seems to be widely achievable, but even with an updated BIOS, it may be hit and miss trying to get the cpu to 4ghz on that motherboard. Have you tried updating the BIOS, or are you running the latest?

Yeah, am on the latest one.

Oh dear, how unfortunate that you have the "worst" overclocking p55 motherboard.

Not very constructive man :mad: and the reviews I read before buying it said it OC'd just as well as any other board out there.

FAIL

reviews lie, your board is shit, just give up, its likely to fry before it reaches 3.8

Well... as it so happens... I did get it to 4000Mhz yesterday and it is stable. So thanks for your helpful insight D-bag :rolleyes:

Screenshot or it never happened. jk. Grats. It just takes hours and hours of tinkering to find the right spot.
