ok, after all these years, i keep saying ill do it ill do it. keep building rigs for it and never do it.

finally decided to start messing with it today. just using the asus turbo v proggy to get my feet wet. heres what the "auto tuning" set to the bios and the results.

so at this point, push it harder? slow it down?

all my years as a tech i spent most of my time keeping things stable, stock clocks etc..

now its time to have some fun.

what should i do next?

like ibt or something else and if so, for how long?

if ibt, what should i set everything to? remember, total noob here
 
I'd run IBT 25x-50x, stress level high, 4 threads

Prime 95, Blend test, 8 hours

If it passes that, it's pretty stable, then you can either push higher, or slowly drop vCore to find the lowest vCore that particular overclock is stable at. Keep temps under 70C.
 
push it harder. 4ghz is a good baseline on those chips.
 
ok apparently this cpu just runs toasty as hell.

i reset everything to do a baseline run, set pretty much everything except dram timings to auto (dram timings are set to 9-9-9-24 as per the sticker on the ram stick).

got up to 91 with high and 4 theads after just 5 runs.

ok decided to say screw it and start over. reset to defaults in the bios, ran a baseline. MUCH cooler.

so ive only changed the blk at this point to 150.

heres where we are at.

what should i do next?

Continue to push the BLCK to higher value and run IBT again.

But 91 degrees @3.66GHz and 1.28v seems a bit weird to me.
 
im gonna try to drop the multi to 20 and push the blk, maybe push the ram a little since its ddr3 1600 anyway. way above spec for an i5. see how that goes.
 
man this thing runs hot.

at this point, i dunno what to do, seems like if i even fart in the direction of overclocking with this chip, i end up in the mid 80's in a hurry.

any advice?
 
Check to make sure your water block is mounted correctly, maybe reseat it and reapply new thermal paste.

Make sure your water system is circulating, those temps seem very high, especially for water.

Make sure you don't have any dead fans, dust clogged rads.

i had my first brain fart moment.

apparently 6 months ago, when i put this system together. i had both the fans firing toward each other. so after cleaning out a bunch of dust clogs from it, remounting the inner fan on the rad, i think i might have better success lol.
 
new baseline. got up to 2.9 with speedstep during ibt 5 runs, 4 threads on high. maxed out at 1.0 core voltage. this is MUCH better. going to change blk to 150 next.

only change here was bclk was set to 150, speedstep and everything else on, offset voltage.

at this point, ill wait for some more direction from you guys on what to set, and what not to set next.

its funny, some people forget the ocp in this sites name is all just about this kinda stuff =p. moments like this help me remember why the [H] rocks =D
 
Ok, decided after some more research to give 3.8 a go and then let you guys direct me from there. MUCH better after fixing my 6 month old brain fart lol. 1 hour linpack test, never broke 70C

so you guys tell me. what should i go for next? only 200mhz to go. im sure this system can do it under 75. i just need you guys to tell me how at this point =p
