i5-750 vs. i7-920

interesting :p

even though its a cheaper mainstream chip- it makes me feel solid about buying my i7

cost of an i5 system will be quite low: ~$200 processor, ~$100-150 p55 board, ~(2x)$75 2x2gb ddr3

sheit, people might not even want 8gb of memory
 
I heard that the 920 is being discontinued and replaced with the i5. The 920 is the CPU I was looking to purchase and this news is causing me to consider acting a little quicker in buying it.

yea i dont regret buying my i7 either.

these mainstream cpus are supposed to be cheaper but the suggested retail pricing on some of these p55 mobos is around $200 which is pretty close, if not more expesive, than some x58 boards.

i5 doesnt seem to be that much less in price, you can easily buy a $200 i7 at MC, if not for a little more on the forums, and theres a few x58 mobos under $200, and ddr3 triple channel isnt too expensive either.

that was just rumor and according to most of the (leaked?) roadmaps for intel itll still be produced till Q3/Q4 of 2010.
 
Wow the turbo with the 24x multi might make a good OC rig for gaming! 1.5V for 4.5Ghz, but we don't even know if that's linpack stable.
 
Wouldn't want i5 personally, triple channel is the big thing to me, more smaller sticks for faster speeds.

But then again, might be better than the q9550 set up I just bought.

What are you doing that benefits from triple channel? Most of the benchmarks I've seen said it made little to no difference.

i7 has come down a lot in price, and I'm curious to see what happens when i5 comes out also. i5 will probably be more expensive at first especially if i7 prices come down even lower due to less demand. At least through the end of the year or so i7 will probably remain a better buy.

I don't do anything but overclock that would benefit. It's not the bandwidth I'm looking for so much as the ability to run more smaller sticks of ram to get a larger amount than with dual channel :p

3x 2gb or 3x 1gb?

dual channel would be
2x 2gb or 2x 1gb.

Not a huge difference in ram there.

Too bad they didn't show the OC'd results for both chips. They had a tantalizing shot of the i5 overclocked to 4.5 ghz. But was it stable enough for benchmarking at that point?
The i7 920 seemed to hold the slight edge in most of the tests. What would have been interesting would have been benchmarks of both the chips after they had been OC'd to the max stable testing point.
Pricing if the i5 750 is going to determine its success. It better be significantly cheaper than an i7 920 to be worth it.

No. The current LGA1366 i7 CPUs will only be replaced by the upcoming Gulftown 6-core CPUs. They will not be replaced by lower-end i5 chips (or by LGA1156 i7 CPUs).

its all down to cost, the i7 is obviously the higher end, but itll cost you a bit more for the extra performance.

the i7 1156 cpus, are a mystery right now as the lowest end one will cost same as the 920 but how it performs is yet to be seen.

also 1366/x58 boards have more pci-e lanes then p55.

I have heard rumor of the 1366/x58 boards becoming discontinued (or replaced,as Zero82 had said) with the release of the 6-core i9's... Making your $250 cpu and $300 mobo essentially useless for future upgrading

the 6 core gulftowns use the same platform as the 1366 i7s (x58), so no the x58 boards are future proof at least for now, also take into consideration that the first 6 core cpu is rumored to be an extreme edition so expect prices in $1000's.
 
still no valid reason to upgrade my Q6700 yet, just doesn't seem that big of an upgrade.

Seeing as the i5 appears to be more or less here, I'm sure we'll see plenty of in depth reviews in the very near future. This is a very high profile and highly anticipated release.

Price/performance ration will probably be a bit skewed at first, however. Keep in mind i7 motherboards are readily available under $200 now. I would be surprised (though quite impressed) if the initial 1156 boards cost less than $150, which is where they would have to be for there to be any sort of price benefit.

I think for the next couple of months the sweet spot will still be with low end i7, but by the beginning of next year or so it should shift over to i5.
 
We should see some decent prices in the next couple months. No worries, it will be cheaper than the i7 config.
