i5 750 Overclocking Newb Question

G'day all,

I'm new to the overclocking game, this is the first time I've done it. Read up a bit on voltages and multipliers and stuff, but other than that I dont really know much.

I've cranked it up to 167MHz with a 21 multiplier, so 3507MHz. RAM has a 10x multiplier, so 1670MHz, initially was running with auto voltages which made Core Voltage go up to 1.31ish, so I'm manually backing it off (down to 1.264V now, will keep dropping to see how low it'll go).

Now my problem, can I get the multiplier above 21? I've read other people running with a multiplier of 24 using turbo mode, but even with it enabled it only maxes out at 21. Temps are still reasonable (around about 60 C in HWmonitor) and its been running prime95 for the past 20 minutes or so.

Thats for the i7 860.

I think most mobos only allow 21x multiplier for i5-750 anyways. The 24 multiplier is again for the i7-860 which has hyperthreading.

That's a shame, oh well! When I bought it 3 or 4 months ago I didn't intend to do any crazy overclocking on it, its just that its spending a lot of time number crunching for a University project and thought I might as well overclock.

Well I got it up to 4.011GHz by bumping up the core voltage a bit, but about 5 minutes into prime95 it starts making a weird sound, sounds a bit like a hard drive sound, but faster and it doesn't sound like its coming from the hard drive. Any idea what it might be? Prime95 kept running, but I stopped it manually because I was concerned about the sound.

Dropped it down to 3.925GHz, it still starts making that sound about 10-15 minutes into running prime95, though not as viciously as it did at 4.011GHz. It seems stable (been running now for about half an hour) but I'm concerned about the noise.

Got 4GHz working pretty well now. Manually adjusted all the voltages and now it doesn't make a funny sound anymore (previously I was only modifying core voltage and had the others set to AUTO).

Temps are about 66 C in prime95 large FFT with the side of my case off, its run stable for about an hour now, will give it a longer run later when I have more free time on my hands.
