i5-750 Overclock, failed cooler?

Hi guys,

My i5-750 has been happily overclocked for several years at 3.6 GHz with my H50 cooler I bought from someone here. In the past I have not monitored my core temps as I've never had any reason to, stability has been 100% rock solid.

However, yesterday I booted up BF3 and played it for the first time since the big patch dropped last week. Twice now my computer hard shutdown while playing BF3, probably after around 20 minutes of play. No warnings from Windows, no BSOD, just a hard shutdown like the power was pulled. It makes me suspect that I'm having some overheating.

I passed a Real Temp stress test last night using Prime 95 and my cores are idling at 47-50C and maximum load seen was 99C! That can't be right, can it?? I'll go digging around my case after work tonight, but does it sound like my cooler is failing? Is that common with the H50?
 
Mine did that when I forgot to plug in the pump after hooking it up, so its possible your pump went out. You should be able to tell if its running (noise, vibration). Otherwise you can try to reseat the heatsink. The radiator should be too hot to touch (if the CPU is 99C) if the pump is working and it is making good contact.

Good catch; the Vcore was set at Auto so it was reporting 1.3896V. I had updated my BIOS a couple months ago and must have never set the Vcore back to where it should be. Vcore is now set at 1.25 V.

Resetting the Vcore = 1.25V I just ran a Real Temp Prime 95 test, large FFTs for power consumption and got these numbers:

Minimum: 40, 37, 39, 39

Maximum: 78, 79, 73, 80

The radiator was warm to the touch and the pump appeared to be vibrating, but I couldn't tell if it was operating or the vibration was due to case fans. As I'm typing this I'm idling at 40C average across all 4 cores.

So it appears it was just the highly set Vcore. Also it would appear my temps have degraded since I installed the H50. I recorded a load temp of 67C when I benched it during the original overclock, it might be time to reseat it.

Do these temps look ok? Ambient temp is around 20C.
 
Depends on ambient temp and air flow, but they don't seem out of line. I was hitting 99C idling (windows startup still running), so I think your pump is still working like it should.

I just did 50 runs in IntelBurn standard and got to 90C on one core :eek: I think you are right though, the pump is obviously working. It's probably time to dust out the case, check airflow, and maybe reset the heatsink.
