Just wondering if this is worth it?

I didn't know if the i7 would help FPS/performance in games.

I won't be overclocking. Right now I have a GTX 970 with the 4460.

Didn't know if the i7 k would help out in games like Flight Simulator X or Arma 3 that seem to be CPU intensive I guess?

I don't seem to get the best FPS on ultra in arma or FSX in more detailed areas on Ultra settings.

I know Arma isn't the most optimized game and FSX probably isn't either.

I know that I don't have any issues playing Far Cry 4 and BF4 on ultra. THose games run great mostly 60fps all the time with vsync on.

If you are talking about the 4790k you are looking at:

more L2 cache
2x total threads
+ 800 Mhz base clock
+1000 Mhz Turbo

So yes, it will be faster. Noticable? Maybe.

You could likely sell your 4460 for roughly half the cost of the 4790k.

Yeah I actually just got the i5 only like 4 days old with my new build and it really is fast but didn't know if upgrading would be that much better for gaming.

not for gaming. the extra "cores" may be helpful for other tasks, and if you got a "k" version you could easily squeak out a few more mhz.

I guess you could look at Task Manager while you are playing Arma3 and FSX and see what your CPU utilization looks like. If it keeps your cpu cores pegged then it might be worthwhile. IF those games are very heavily CPU intensive AND they utilize multiple cores THEN you could very well see a difference in the most demanding sections.

You're talking about potentially an extra 4 ghz of total processing performance if all cores are being used (4.4ghz turbo vs 3.4ghz turbo) ... that's nothing to sneeze at.

Gotcha. I'll check when I get home how my processor is handling the games and also will research to see if those games actually utilize all 4 cores. I would think they would but not sure.

Your best bet is overclocking. Whether you trade it for an i5 or i7, get a k chip and clock it high. Huge difference.

Purely from a gaming standpoint, the upgrade would not be worthwhile.

Yeah it seems like that's what everyone is saying that for gaming not really worth the upgrade. And I don't think my MB is made for OCing

Arma 3 will eat any amount of CPU you throw at it if running everything cranked up, especially the draw distance. Which MB do you have?

The i5 4570S is comparable spec-wise to a 4460 (just with a slightly slower base clock), and it is shockingly comparable performance-wise to a 4790k in gaming.

I can easily qualify the statement that your gaming experience would likely be identical to a 4790k, even overclocked. The only thing that the 4790k may have going for it is that games are getting better threaded by the day in these times, but that rate of improvement does not at all justify a more meaningful platform / experience improvement like say a GPU upgrade.
