So im trying to OC my i5 2500k, with Asrock Extreme 4 gen 3 board. Im Prime95 stable at 4.4ghhz with 1.28volts. But my volts are set to auto in my Bios. If i attempt to switch them out to manual I'll get a BSOD or even if I go above 4.4 say to 4.5ghz with Auto setting or even manual I get BSOD.

Im running Low voltage DDR3 4 gb Gskill sniper 1600mhz 9-9-9-24 1.25v
My temps are stable full load at 58-61c using corsair h50 watercooler.


any suggestions that I can try?
 
So you are stable at current settings with 4.4 GHz and you want to go higher is the question? Currently you can't go any higher due to not being able to change the voltages and if you do try it, you BSoD. My honest opinion would be to leave it at 4.4 if it is working on stock volts, and as long as the temps are good. Not sure if mucking about to get it to 4.5 or 4.6 is even worth it really.
 
I wanted to make sure that everythibg was good, and if there was a reason why windows would crash if i set voltages to manual. So i assume 4.4 is the furthest i can take it?
 
I am not sure why it crashes when you go to manual, unless one of the settings in manual mode is changed from the auto, causing it to not work.

I'm definitely sure you could go further with the CPU with manual tweeks and such, but what I meant was, in my opinion, the small gain you would get is probably not worth the time if you are running stable now. If you want every piece of performance at any cost, then yeah, you could push it further, just need to figure out the manual mode crashes. I mean 4.4 is pretty respectable imo.
 
thanks OB1 :) 4.4 is pretty good. I'll mess around with it later down the road. systems seems pretty good atm.
 
When you set it to manual, what voltage are you setting? You should be able to set it to manual, set, say 1.3V, and get the same overclock as Auto. But just setting it to manual without setting an actual manual voltage will just give you stock volts, which aren't enough for the overclock - hence the crash.

Also, check what you have Loadline Calibration set to - even if you set 1.28V manually, the board might not be giving enough voltage under load if you have too low a LLC setting (Auto voltage often also means Auto LLC). Depends on the board though.
 
When I set it to manual I get 3 options upon releasing it. Fixed mode, Auto, and something else I cant remember off the top of my head. But I use Fixed mode and match the highest volts that CpuId shows when the cpu is at full load. 1.28v sometimes 1.3v and still Bsod. I rant prime 95 when I had it at 1.28v and 4.5ghz Worker 4 stopped working due to error. workers 1-3 worked and passed firt initial pass fine.

Try setting it manually instead of Auto. Not sure what the levels correspond to (or how many there are) but try something a little above the middle and see what happens. Sounds like you aren't getting enough volts in manual, so either play with the LLC or just feed it more volts via the Fixed setting. When you are running Prime95, what Vcore are you actually getting (use CPUz to find out)?
 
So i set the LLC to 3 and set voltage to cpu to 1.3 ran prime 95 with with first initial pass worker 3 errror and stopping, 1-2-4 ran fine, stopped test to reboot then got BSOD. reset to 4.4 with auto voltage and LLC to auto prime 95 ran fine getting 4.390ghz @ 1.272volts being the highest. I understand what LLC is and compensating for Vdroop. Just not used to Levels 1-5. On my 775 board the LLC was vdroop and you could set for low or high. I'll have to do a bit more research im sure the chip can push more. But would there be and real noticable results? my temps on prime95 are from left to right highest 58-66-65-64.celcius. idle temps left to right. 29-32-33-34c
 
Honestly, if it is working on Auto at 4.4, it might be well enough to just leave it be. Unless you have a competitive need to push it for all it's worth, you aren't going to see any real-world performance difference between 4.4 and 4.6 or 4.8, and it might take significant voltages to get higher. The advantage of Auto, over a fixed coltage, is that the CPU will down-volt when idle, so you'll get some cooling and power savings. You can use Offset mode to the same effect, but again, the real-world gains of the extra 200 MHz or so might not be worth it to you.
