Still hoping to move forward with a new build. I have basically everything picked out but debating on CPU and video card still.

For now, the rig will be mainly used for 1080p gaming, web surfing, word processing, large spreadsheets, some photo editing. I can't fit a new monitor into the build so 1440 or higher will be at least a couple of years away most likely.

So let's say I will be 1080p gaming for the next 3 years. I plan on keeping this build for 5+ years, what do you go with now?

i7-6700k and a GTX1060 6GB
or
i5-6600k and a GTX1070?

I can find both combos for around the same price. Both the cpu and video cards can be had for about $100 difference. What is the best long term with the possibility of upgrading to 1440 or 4k several years in the future?

My vote go for the I5 + GTX 1070... is better to be faced to few games where CPU bottlenecks with the i5+GTX 1070 (overclocked of course) rather to all games being GPU bottlenecked with the i7+1060..

An i5 + 1070 will last longer than an i7 + 1060.

That makes 3 votes for i5+1070.

The only exception would be if you really plan to get a new monitor in 3 years then you might be better off with the i7+1060 and getting a new video card when you get the monitor as a 1070 may not be all that great at 1440p or higher by time 2020 rolls around.

Even in that scenario, you'll still be better off with a 1070. You'll be buying a new video card regardless.

DX12 will be utilizing the CPU more than before, and being that it's the new kid on the block..........
Truly either setup will be great.

For now since you are gaming at 1080P - the 1060 will be more than enough. You can upgrade video cards when you upgrade your monitor.
At this current time the 1070 will give you higher framerate with the I5 -- but 5 years down the road you'll probably appreciate that I7 humming a long with a new video card more than the I5.

Upgrade your video card every couple 1-2 years and your processor and motherboard every 4-5 years - That cycle works pretty well for me.

I'm not telling you which way to go - i'm just playing devils advocate to the views presented so far.

thanks for the input everyone. I'm still waiting a bit on the build and seeing what prices do. I've watched stuff drop ever so slightly the last month. May wait up to another month and see what happens.
