ok so im looking to upgrade my secondary machine which is HTPC/ lan party machine.. its currently a E6600 with 4 gig of ram and an HD4850, Im debating wether to upgrade to a SB I3 or an A8, its going to cost about $50 more to go with the A8 but i really dont know if the performance gain will be worth it.. suggestions..

Please answer the questions in the "ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS FIRST" sticky.

Second, i3 what? A8 what? I know that you're looking at an AMD processor versus an Intel processor, but which particular ones are you looking at?

if you're near a Microcenter... i5 2500K @ 180 (plus 60 off any Z68 mobo), i3 @ 100

AMD cpus + mobos cheap combos

well technically the i3 2100 has a better CPU and when paired with a graphics card it outperforms the A8 3850. However if you want to build a lan box you could get a microATX, bolt it to the top of a PSU, throw in some ram and an ssd and you are in business.

CPU bench
A8 3850: 5566 (i am highly suspect of this score)
E6600: 1508
i3 2100: 3852

OK, I'll bite: What games are you playing on this "LAN party machine"? At what resolution?

i dont play anything very demanding on this machine "SC2, MW2" but would like to be capable of newer games at med/high settings.. typically its running 1600x900 when gaming.. and 1080p on my tv.. i guess what im mostly wondering is would an I3 2100 with the 4850 drastically outperform the A8 3850.. keeping in mind i could spend a little more on a 6550 and hybrid crossfire it with the APU.. there is a microcenter about 2 hours away, never been there and have no idea if i ever will have time to get there so im limited to newegg..

6670 is the fastest card which crossfires with the onboard gpu. However you can turn the onboard gpu off and run 4 CPU cores and then throw in any card you want. But the reality is that SC2 and MW2 will work fine on the integrated GPU solo. Starcraft 2 might have to be at medium setting for the late game but it will be functional.

yeah my current config.. im assuming is cpu limited , SC2 is running on medium settings and occasionally laggs a bit..
