So, I took a plunge with making a media/file server for use while I'm at campus. I wanted something I could keep running nearly 24/7 and that I could setup to download my shows and record things on schedule. Well, I'm not nearly done setting everything up yet, but so far...IT ROCKS!
Specs:
Athlon II X3 .. 3.1 GHz
4 GB RAM
BIOSTAR|A870U3 AMD870 AM3 R
ZOTAC nVidia GeForce 8400GS 512 MB DDR3
Thermaltake TR2 500W ATX12V V2.3 Core i7 Compliant Power Supply ATX
Antec Gaming Case Two Hundred v2
I bought these between Amazon and Newegg. Total was approximately $270, no tax, and free shipping on everything. I received a $40 gift card from Amazon due to their CC promotion. So, in the end it was $230. I tried unlocking the 4th core, and couldn't get the system to boot any OS, so I'll have to fiddle around with the voltages when I have more time.
So far, due to campus connection limitations and my lack of a gigabit router, I have to resort to routing my laptop connection through my server (a simple connection sharing).
I've set up samba, and I'm getting sustained transfer of around 90 MB/s. This is with just one green WD 1 TB drive. I plan to add in capability to network boot attached computers and setup the server to automatically backup clients. It'll be a long term work in progress, but the initial setup is going great. And man, I love X forwarding. It's making setting stuff up a breeze.
By the way, currently running Xubuntu. Not enough time to jump into Solaris and ZFS and the likes of which many of you are already running. But, you've all been a great force from which to learn from, so perhaps by next Summer I'll change stuff out.
Thanks again!

EDIT: The Zotac will be retired unless it can be leveraged for on-demand encoding.
