Ok last night I was burning a cd and I started to get error for each song that it was initializing. I waited a while since they all came up with errors. After about 10 minutes I moused over the whole window and the hourglass was still there. (by the way I was using the windows media player to burn the cd). I used ctrl+ alt+ del and it told me that windows media player was not responding. So i just ended the process. After that point my pc no longer recognized my cd rom in My computer. I went to Device Manager and there was no unkown hardware installed, also there was no cd rom device that looked to be installed. The Samsung Writemaster ts-h552 has only burned about 5 cds at the most . Please let me know if anyone has run into this issue or if anyone knows a fix.

Make sure the IDE/SATA and power cables are firmly attached?

Do you have something other than media player to burn with?

Can you try it in a different computer?

Agreed. Try actual burning software, and/or another computer. You also could check for a firmware update to the burner.

Well actually yea I did try to reboot it. Ummm the problem that I am seeing is that I think it has to do wit Windows Media Player. I wound up running into a similar problem here at work with a co workers cd burner. Once I install the original cd rom back in the pc recognizes it. But wen I put the burner back in it still didnt see it.
For my problem at hand I will try that wen I get home though. I think I can get a copy of like Roxio or something here from work to try it out at home. But you think if I install Roxio that my cd rom would wind up appearing again?

If you have XP, you should be able to burn a test disk, XP has native support for burning disks...dosn't it?

Yes, you can drag and drop files from explorer to the CD, when you eject you will get a pop-up asking you to burn the data.

You can burn music CDs with media player.

Well there is no cd icon so how can i just drop the files in there.
If that's the case, it's likely the CD drive is either bad, or it's not configured properly at the hardware level. Windows rarely "stops seeing" a CD drive.

Does the BIOS see the drive on POST/ in the BIOS menu?

Check cables, check jumpers, check power connection to the drive.

Only time a windows install ever stopped seeing a drive, in my case, was when the drive was dead and gone.

Which means, time for upgrades.
