To shut my machines down. While they are not massive producers. The program is becoming a massive pain in the ass now days.

I just don't have the time anymore to fiddle with such problems.

The unending frustrations with the servers is enough alone.
New clients and WU's that are utter trash.
A point system that's so bad now days it could star in its own horror film.

I do think the work is important! I really do. But I've always had a issue with the fact the drug company's and others in the medical community haven't helped. And I know who's going to make the money off the research when it pans out. I guess that's the cynical side of me that got out of health care as a career.

I think I will use some of the time I would have otherwise spent on this to maybe build wheel chair ramps for those that need them. Help my wife make small comfort pockets for people that have ports plumbed into there chest. The pockets protect there skin from the narly ports that eat up there skin. You would think the idiots in the medical community would come up with something like this. Not a chance. Nor could they lend a cpu cycle.

Ive folded 5,300k points for the cause across three teams in my time with the program. So as work finishes up tonight and in the morning I will turn clients off and shut machines down.

I might fold again,,, yeah never know!

The [H]ord is the best team in the world. Maybe the loons on the left coast can learn a thing or two from you.

It has been fun. Time to move on.

If you are frustrated with FAH, you can always switch WCG. The client is extremely stable and I've never had a problem with it.
 
It is sad to see you go.

Might I suggest, that as you leave, you can set up your normal every day computer(s) with the uniprocessor client, just so we get back to the "wasted cycles" base that started this whole thing. That client won't do a whole lot to your electric bill, nor should it cause you any problems. This is just a suggestion though. I really suggest you just don't leave;)

 
I'm sad to hear your decision to leave but like others said, can you at least consider running WCG or just run some uniprocessor clients and leave them running ?

I can understand your frustration and it's unfortunate.

 
I ditched FAH and all the hassle of the SMP clients and just went to WCG. The BOINC client is a million times better than the SMP clients.

The only way to earn good points is through the GPU client, and the only reliable client is the single core console client, which earns crap points. So there really isn't much incentive to FAH anymore when you have to jump through hoops just to get the SMP client to run for a few days straight for the non-hardcore member that wants to fully utilize his quadcore for the program.

It looks like you either run single core clients here anymore with dimpy PPD, or you're a power user and have 15 GPU's running limited cores doing very refined work, which doesn't really benefit the program as much as a CPU does. Especially those who dump the slow WP's to gain faster WP's or better PPD WP's

Sorry to see you end with such frustration. I am curious about what you would like the drug companies and medical community to be doing to help? Folding research isn't what they normally "do". :confused:

I pulled my 8800GTX and 9800GT due to EUE's requiring constant monitoring or no wu's completed.
I stopped running SMP due to the server returning a "ACK" when trying to send results.

Glad to hear you are going to look at ways to help people first hand though. :)
 
I have opted to run the single console program as a service on my small farm of borged boxen. I don't get much production, but it takes no attention when installed as a service. Try it and you will like it if you're motivation is crunching WUs (and not amassing points).

come on.. join the darkside with us and go to WCG... i gave fah up a few weeks ago... once you go WCG you will never go back..
 
I also have stopped folding. Way too many EUEs and other instability issues. I'll start again when they get the problems fixed. On the other had, I now enjoy a not so toasty office now! (I live in TX where it's still in the 80s)

I see the console client going the way of the dodo soon, perhaps as early as next year. With the GPU clients gaining ground, becoming more mature and producing orders of magnitude more work, I just don't see a place for uniprocessor clients. Whatever work there is left to do on a CPU could probably be given to the SMP client and have a faster turnaround.

Please folks,,,,, Im not full of anger or massive frustration. Really Im not. I just need to do something else for mankind.

To be honest. Im struggling to keep faith in the human race. One vehicle Ive used for this endeavor has been FAH. Its not full filing for me anymore. Its work and a massive but affordable use of electricity. Its not hands on, its not personnel. While I function well in geekhood and have done so for years. I need the hands on stuff. With the power I used just today. I could have ran my tools to build a grateful person a wheel chair ramp. Or ran my wifes sewing machine to help her make port pockets for people that are fighting the battles of a life time now! I might start volunteering some time to help local hospitals with some engineering and maint. needs. I miss working with medical gas systems, gensets, boilers and chillers, electrical systems. Rebuilding a medsurg bed or a OR table. Or changing filters and calibrating a lazer or cart rig.

Just time to go help in a diff. area. :)

Sorry to hear about your FAH problems. Hope you still atleast continue with you spare cycles as others have suggested.
 
psyshack - I feel your pain man. I had a lot of problems with my GPUs. the GPU2 clients were some of my most stable clients until about a month ago. Then it became a big time commitment that I just wasnt willing to devote to the project.

To make a long story short, I installed the WCG client on 3 of my CPUs about 3 weeks ago and I havent touched them since. I commend your desire to help your fellow man in more of a hands on way. I just want to extent an invitation to come help the Horde's WCG team. We are curentlly ranked 78th and we could always use another CPU or two.:) This way you could still help with some processor cycles but not take time away from your more hands on projects.

Yeah, I can "dig it" psyshack :D

This F@H DC project has become a major PITA here lately (fu*cked up client's, WU's, etc). :( I chucked my CPU SMPing all together and went over to GPU2ing in F@H and CPU DCing in WCG on my Q6600's and GPU2ing on my E6600. Even GPU2 is starting to be frustrating with the constant weekend server problems and I'm looking serious at a GX2 :rolleyes:)

You sure sound like you're in the right frame of mind with unselfishly helping mankind (including womenkind :)) with the wonderful "hands on" stuff you mentioned. If you still want to run electrons around a boxen and burn electricity, but don't have the time to devote to constant boxen watch, please give WCG a try. I've been running it for about 3x months and sometimes I forget it's running it's so trouble free and "hands off" ;)
