I have a Maxtor DiamondMax 30GB slim drive that I keep all my MP3's on. I would keep it in a firewire enclosure and take it to LAN's to 'add' to the collection. Anyways, I was doing a favor for someone at work and getting some music on thier iPod to listen to while they work out and I accidently used the wront power supply for my enclosure. It sent too much voltage to the HDD and killed it. :(

I think only the controller board is damaged, looks like the chip that handles power took the hit directly so I'm hoping the data is still in tact and I just need another controller. I have two more of these HDD's at work, I'm going to try swapping the boards and getting it working. Is this a worthwhile plan or should I not bother as my 6 year collection is now *dust in the wind*?

Thanks,
~Kris

Kris, no harm in trying. Look for a sticker on the PCB that will help you find the correct match. Should be 5 chars, i.e. D6FYA, F4FYA, D6FCB, etc. Best of luck!

Yea, there is a serial numbered barcode sticker near the rear connectors.

My bad 30GB: B6FEA (Main chip: Ardent C5-C1)
20GB: B6FEA (Main chip: Ardent C5-C1)
30GB: B8FEA (Main chip: Ardent C9-C1)

The 20 and 30GB drives both have bad heads I think from use but the boards themselves should still be good.

Are you sure it's the controller board, and maybe not the FireWire to IDE interface that fried?

Maybe you can take the drive out of the enclosure and mount it in a desktop to get the data off of it?

I would use an old system, of course, just in case. Parts CAN eat parts sometimes!

I havent even tested the Firewire box yet to see if its good or not. I immediately took the drive to a normal desktop. I'll post pics of why I *know* the controller board is what fried tonight. ;)

I swapped controller cards and it worked! Got 'Cyclic Redunency Check' errors on a few files but most of the MP3's were recovered to another drive without fail. I lost maybe 20 MP3's but recovered 6000+ so I'm happy. I think the drive is still good, so I'm going to ZERO it out and probably use it again, just not for anything... *critical* lol

I already lost 8GB of my more favored MP3's on another drive due to my PSU failing and undervolting the drives... they are all still there but not recognized.... been trying to find software to recover it ever since but I think its a lost cause... the drive itself still functions GREAT and not EVERYTHING was lost but I didnt loose a large chunk of data to it. :/

Thanks guys,
~Kris

Buy a DVD burner and back up them mp3's!

Hopefully soon I'll have two 320GB WD drives in a mirror on a dedicated P3 866mhz fileserver. I'll keep my 160 in there too for not so important storage and the 120 in my gamer for games and immediate storage. :)

I have a LG DVD-RAM/RW drive thats pretty sweet, I should get some discs just as extra protection.
