I was playing generals and the computer shutoff and made a loud noise.
When I tried turning it back on it wont boot.

if I remember correctly the emergency shutoff option was set at 95*C

Is that way too hot for a 3200+ ?

I took the CPU out of the computer and looked at it. However I have never seen a fried CPU so I dont know what to look for. Everything looks fine on the core, it doesnt looked cracked or anything.

Any suggestions?

whoa 95c i think would fry any processor.

if it really hit that i would say its fried.

Your power supply could have just busted a cap or something.. which in turn could have fried the chip ;D
What happens when you power the system up? Fans spin? A sound generally would tip me off to mean the hard drive or PSU or other CAP busted.... a CPU generally doesn't make a pop sound or anything when frying... and it'd take some crazy mis-mounted heatsink to get to 95c, IMO.

not mismounted, it was a thermaltake silent thing that said it was rated up to 3200+ (which is bullshit apperntly)

Ill try clearing the cmos tonight when I get home.

Th fans spin, and I think I can even hear the harddrives, but nothing is displayed on the screen.

Theres a temperature readout in the bios for this very reason. Install new heatsink, etc. check temps. Don't just assume its on right unless u've done it 200x even then its good to take 30 secs and double check that its fine!

haha score for the alx-800

down with the silent boost! alx rules! woot!

were you doing any fiddling in your PC during/right before this? If so, check the butt of your video card, it might've come unseated... More info?

a reset of the BIOS has solved the problem. Thankfully the CPU isn't toast, but this HSF is out the window.

I have just purhcased a watercooling kit that should be arriveing in a few days. Ill use the silentboost until it gets here (no gaming).

thanks everyone for your help.

I'd still be worried about the "loud noise" you heard.

Yeah my PSU went bust. I heard a popping then a fizz then a little smoke and burnt smell. I replaced everything except my PSU and still had my pc shutting down, LOL After about a 180 dollars worth of upgrades I figured out it was my PSU

My fried Barton 2500+. RIP.

If your chip looks fine, and doesn't smell burnt, my personal experience makes me guess it isn't fried. But that's just because mine was extremely obvious after only a few seconds. Yeah, don't ask. And yes, contrary to what it might look like, I was using a heatsink and working fan.

Punchbugy,
Details please... I'd like to know how that processor became like that.

ouch

It's kind of a mystery. I mean I've put together several socket A based computers in the past, so I'd like to think I know what I'm doing. Everything was set and double checked, so I hit the power button. I got the bios to come up, but then the screen went black. Couldn't get it to turn back on, and I quickly was greeted with the smell of death. Total running time was 4 or 5 seconds, no more. How quickly the mood changes from "new computer!" to "...fuck...".

I of course tested every component of the computer, but everything is working properly, as it is currently running with an older AMD chip (1700+). Same heatsink even: Volcano 11 heatsink with different fan (noise reasons) and Arctic Silver 5.

Newegg is great however and after talking to them on the phone for a while, they issued me an RMA for the 2500+. Their website claims they won't replace it if there's heat damage (uh..), but they told me not to worry, and marked the chip as defective. I'm just waiting on the shipping now.

So really, I don't know what caused it to happen. But life goes on.
