Okay...I've SERIOUSLY been thinking of a new digital camera. For those that know cameras HELP ME

lets just assume I can afford the cameras I'm posting.

Canon Rebel XT

Canon S80
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16830120172

both are 8.0MP the rebel is a DSLR. For those that are into photos...is the DSLR worth it? in the long run? would you recommend it to someone who's trying to get a hobby moving?

this is not something that I'm rushing into. I've never put this amount of money on a hobby besides my computer. For the owners: I've used a DSLR before, (canon 20D) its not mine...but I loved it.

Pretty hard to beat the flexability of a DSLR.

I have a Canon Digital Rebel, and I love it.

The only thing that stands out to me about the S80 is that it's pretty compact. Somedays I wish I had an Canon SD400 when I want to take pictures, but didn't want the bulk of my SLR.

SLR is awesome. Tons of lenses for Nikon or Canon. the killer choice for me was the near lack of noise in low light photos. I have a Nikon D50 btw. I would consider a D50 if you wanna find a middle ground camera in between those two as far as price.

I've heard that Canons seem clearer than Nikons. Any comments on that?

the D50 looks like a good deal.

i think that's all gonna come down to the lens being used, but i'm not certain. The kit lens on the canon is probably a little better so that's why you've probably heard that. The D50 should be sharper than the S80 based on the characteristics of a DSLR.

If you plan on doing photography as, a hobby, long term. In which case it will become long term as, it is addicting. Go with a Dslr, while there are really some fine P&Ss you will quickly out grow them. I too have the D50, still playing with the kit lense to see exactly where its limitations are. If I get a new lense now, I will play with it as, usual because, it would be a new toy.

Personally i would go with a dslr. I prefer canon as thats what i own;) i have the 20d and love it.

The Flexibilty of dslr is much higher over all as you can alwasy add different things to it.
I have seen barely used 20d' going for right around $1k + -

i would go DSLR over the S80 or over any point and shoot. I would also choose the RebelXT over the D50 hands down....

curious on your reasons why.

Just want to know...

Two biggest reasons:
- Shutter lag on most digicams is HORRID. SLRs its imperceptable.
- No manual focus ring. Sure you MIGHT be able to hack it with pushbuttons, but 99.5% of the time you will hate that.

I was curious to know why he'd choice the XT over the D50...but thanks.

OK. Cant go wrong with any of Nikons D70, D50, or the Canon 20D, Rebel or XT. Personally, if I was in the market for a new SLR, I'd wait to see what is announced at PMA next week and then decide. Rumors of some pretty hot upgrades, and you might be able to get current gen cameras at fantastic savings.

Current threads at www.dpreview.com are hinting that Canon will announce over 70 new products, at the show, runors of a 20D replacement have begun to become deafening.

I love my 20D, and really need better glass over a new SLR, so it would have to be pretty huge to convince me to upgrade, but we will see.

Sam
