Hey guys, I have enjoyed HardOcp and the community for several years now and finally I am going to try and use these forums.

I am building a PC for my Dad. I already have all of the parts but I jacked up and now am in a pickle.

2 WD 740 Raptors
1 200Gb SATA
Plextor 12x SATA DVD-RW
Abit AG8
GeForce 6800GT
3.4 GHz Prescott

Those of you familiar with the AG8 will already see my fuck up. It is PCI-X16, not AGP.

My question then, is how do I remedy this system quickly and relatively cheaply?

I have found a few i865 Mobo's with LGA775, but they only have 2 SATA connectors. I could get a $35 Sata card, but I have heard bad things about them slowing boot times significantly/etc.
I still can't find a PCI-X vid with the price and punch of the 6800GT (paid $340).

Update: Here I found the Gigabyte 8I915P DUO Pro-A. Anyone know how this board does? I have no exp. with Gigabyte. Will the VIA RAID controller handle the Raptors well? And most importantly, does anyone actually know where I can buy the Pro-A version?

Thanks,

Tcraig

see if you can return the mobo to newegg (if that's where you got it from) for a refund...you can do that if it's w/i 30 days or something...

Nice specs for your dad. He needs a 6800GT??????

Lol, He plays alot of games, plus it has to last 2-3 years before his next purchase.

I ended up finally finding a Duo Pro-A ($164). We'll see how it works. Anyone want to buy an opened but unused (has not seen power yet) AG8? :D :D [I don't want to pay the restocking fee to Newegg]

I can't help you with the SATA question...but as for Gigabyte as a brand? Top notch, great bang for the buck and very reliable...I have built several machines around budget Gigabyte boards and they have performed flawlessly.

If you ordered the whole show from them, call them up, explain what happened, and ask if you can exchange the MoBo. I've had good results from talking directly to them in the past, even when it was my boo boo......

Good Luck - B.B.S.

They don't carry a board with the specs I need, so I would have to get a refund, not exchange. I'll give em a call and see.

Thanks

This is turning into an exercise in frustration.

Found a Gigabyte Duo Pro-A at ComputerHQ.com. They shipped me the non-A version (no AGP). They did not actually have the "A" in stock. Then I found one of the new Soltek SL-865Pro-775 at NewEgg. Fantastic, right? Well, the board they sent me was not this at all, and it is not to be found for sale anywhere now.

Here is google's cached NewEgg page:

Basically I need the following features in a motherboard. They do exist, but finding an actual one for sale anywhere is giving me an aneurism.

Socket T
AGP Slot
2+ PCI (old)
3+ SATA
SATA RAID

Anyone know where to actually purchase one of these? Explaining these delays to my Father is starting to make me look like [?more of?] an idiot.
