Ok, so I'm a conservative gamer. I love to game but I DON'T love to spend money on pc hardware. My bad ass 9500pro can still run the new games at decent fps but the fan is dying out and I want to upgrade soon in preparation for Quake 4. I was thinking of buying a new card for around $200 give or take, not sure which but now I have a friend who's trying to sell a 6800GT with an aftermarket cooler on it for around $250. Should I take up his offer and spend a little extra? Will this purchase keep my pc gaming going for another 1 1/2 to 2 years??


Oh I'm not into ocing anymore so that shouldn't weigh in on suggestions and my friend also oc'ed the 6800GT. I wont be getting a pci express mobo for a while so only consider AGP cards.
 
Can he take your 9500pro and $200 or 190 for his 6800GT? What brand is his anyway...
 
Go with a 6800nu for 170$ and unlock the pipes but dont oc it. With that I dont think you will be much slower than with a 6800GT because with the system you have the cpu and memory will start to bottleneck things at around 6800nu/6600GT level. Use the money you saved to get at a stick of 1 gig memory, as these days shooters push 1gig of memory usage for their textures, even at 1024 resolution. With this you will probably have better performance on Q4 than if you just got a 6800GT.
 
Try to talk him down. 6800GT is 300 new. Its an OK price, though. Good card (to answer your question, yes).
 
I too came from a 9500pro. Although I stuck an AMD HS on it to cool the sucker. Now I have a 6800GT and love it.
