New here and hope to get some help deciding on a gpu. I bought a new saphire nitro 7900xtx a couple of weeks ago. When it worked it was amazing. The issue was that during gaming I had no issues. But when I was on my desktop or simply starting an app like steam I would get constant freezing every 2 to 5 mins. These freezes would result in me rebooting my pc. I did the usual things like cleaning with DDU, different drivers and even a clean install on windows 11. I even tried asking on the steam forums with mixed answers. Anyway I decided to return the gpu as I thought it was bad. I have never in my 25 years of pc use ever had this issue. Now that the gpu is returned I thought about a 4080 super. One of the reason I picked the 7900xtx was its memory amount (24GB). With the 4080 its 16GB. So whats the performance difference between these gpus and how long would a 16GB gpu last.

For how long a GPU would last what is your cutoff for a sunset/retired GPU now? 1080 Ti would be retired and sold but plenty of people will pay Apex Legends and such so it rolls on? Usually benchmarks on sites won't be with High settings in somewhat new brutal titles like Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora but do you ever lower settings to High and it doesn't look worse enough to matter?

The 4080 Super is more power efficient gaming but with stock settings there isn't much of a performance gap over a large sample of games.

They would be very common video cards to have Youtube comparisons and frametime graphs and check if it's almost flat. You can scroll to RX 7900 XTX vs. RTX 4080 Super Comparison https://gamersnexus.net/gpus/lame-c...-review-benchmark-comparison-value-discussion

Hardware Unboxed released a video this morning for the 4060 Ti 4352 CUDA cores and there is an 8GB version or the 16GB version (only drawing about 159W gaming) and they made scenarios to "break" the 8GB card's performance but allowed plenty of DLSS. But a 4080 Super 10240 CUDA cores, higher clocks, allowed to draw far more power and with 16GB GDDR6X not just GDDR6 is in the heavyweight class it will last many years.

Can you give us some more information to go on? What is the rest of your system, power supply, budget, etc?

Along with that, what sort of monitor do you have (or want to get)? What kind of games do you play?

Monitor resolution is a big thing, and NVidia vs. AMD often comes down to what sort of games you play these days. Like if you're into AAA rpgs and adventure games with flashy graphics like me you'll probably prefer NV for better ray tracing performance with that sort of budget. Then the fast action and particularly the online PvP crowd couldn't care less. They want high fps and often turn down settings to make it easier to see the target especially when playing online PvP.

I wouldn't worry about 16GB vs. 24GB. 24GB is a lot. The cards that have that much are top end. Hardly anyone has those and game devs design games to run on what people actually have. With a 4080 Super you'll be turning down settings because the GPU isn't fast enough before you'll need to worry about having enough ram.

You sure it's the GPU? Sounds weird to me as someone who's owned a reference card for well over a year that's rock solid. What's the rest of the system?

Having actually owned and used both a 7900xtx and 4080 super, it's a bit of a wash and really depends on your preferences and needs.

Do you play games wiith and appreciate raytracing? If so, get the 4080 super.

Do you not care about RT, and use mods that require >16GB memory (and want to save $100)? If so, get anothe 7900xtx.

Both are superb cards. 24gb vs 16gb isn't going to matter now or for the next few years. By the time it matters, the GPUs will be dépassé/superceded.
