Well, my trust Dell P991 (trinitron tube) looks like it's dying. There's a subtle "horizontal jiggle" that you can only notice if you are looking closely...but now the screen is making me dizzy...its subtle...but...its getting worse. As well, the convergence is starting to become a bit off in one corner...and if i fix it in that corner, it breaks another corner...anyway you get point.

I'm in college right now, and a 19" LCD would probably be the most useful, but looking at all of them, they are all 1280x1024 resolution. I do a lot of web/photoshop, lots of multi-tasking, video editing, and plenty of gaming. Probably some CAD/MatLab stuff soon too...

I need at least 1600x1200 resolution...on my laptop I've got the 1920x1200 (how come my 17" laptop goes that high res, and they cant make 19" desktop lcd's go that high??) and it looks great.

So I guess I have 2 choices, get one of the 20" LCDs that goes up to 1600x1200, or get a CRT.

The 20" LCDs are at least 600-800 bucks for a nice one. (Any righ rez 19" LCDs?)
I've found by reading around the 24" Sony CRT FW900. Only thing i'm worried about is the 16:10 aspect ratio...that won't distort anything will it? (I'm assuming the odd resolutions will take care of that?)

Sorry for such a long post. Any advice, or suggestions would be great. Thanks guys.
 
19" LCDs only have a native res of 1280x1024. You can change them to a different res but it won't look as great, blurred text etc. The only monitor I can think of that would be to your liking is the dell Dell 2001 FP or that higher model number they have. the 2001 has a 1600x1200 res and the next model has I think 1900xwhatever. Other then that you could go with two 19" lcds or just get a new crt =)
 
Well im trying to get the best bang for the buck, and I've found a place where I can get the FW900 Sony 24" CRT for about $280....factory refurbished...looks like the best deal to me.

I know you can change resolutions, but you can't go any higher than the 1280x1024 without panning (in which case, it wouldnt truly be that resolution). I think I've decided to go with the sony...it'll be bulky in this dorm...but whatever...

Also, how is it that 17" laptop screens have native res of 1920x1200 and 19" desktop models don't go above 1280x1024??

VERY bulky. I wouldn't even mention it if you hadn't said the word "dorm". The monitor is certainly superb but if space may be an issue, as is likely, you might want to get the measurements and be certain you'll be ok with it. It's huge you know, and very heavy.
