I'm in the market for a new monitor set up this summer and I was looking at the Samsung 245BW but I keep hearing mixed things and that the performance changes greatly with each monitor... something about different panels being used for the same model.

I'm fairly new to the LCD world, I've had my 19' CRT sync master for like 6 years or something, and would greatly appreciate any advice you guys would have. My budget is somewhere around 500 to 700 CND, but if there is a make or model I should keep my eye on, perhaps wait a bit to drop in price, I'd be willing to take that route too.

I own a Dell 2407wfp-hc and am very happy with it. My previous monitor was a 19" CRT.

But LCD monitors are much different than CRT's and you should read up a lot on those differences (this forum is a good reference) to see if they will effect you. The differences effect games one way, video watching another, and web surfing yet another. After you understand the differences you should go to a real store and see some examples for yourself.

Yeah I'm pretty aware of the differences between CRT and LCD, just not the differences between LCD and LCD haha. Like the differences between VMA and TN panels. All these acronyms give me a headache. :p So any help in that regard would be greatly appreciated.

One thing you'll find on here is that alot of people are 'Monitor-philes", meaning that they can find alot of things which you may not notice that would make a difference. It is by no means saying people here are too choosy, just more experienced than I am in seeing bad vs good vs amazing.

I have 2 Samsung 226BW's, and I'm quite happy with them, even though I fall as a C-Panel victim. They look alot better than anything I've seen besides the high, high end stuff. (Note that I have not experienced alot of differen monitors). I chose them because they seemed nice for the price, and I got a deal on em.

Either way, the moral of my story, is don't be too afraid of alot of things you hear in the forums if you're not one that can notice (or even think to look for) some bad aspects of a monitor. I think if you make as best an educated decision as you can from these experience users, you'll be extremely happy.

^^

I completely agree with what Wingy has to say. In many cases we create problems when there aren't any that would have bothered us if we were not scrutinising things so much.

However, without this knowledge we would not know any better and in many cases may have settled for less than our money's worth. At the end of the day you need to exercise some good judgement and not blindly accept your purchase, nor be overly paranoid about it. This forum is a great resource for finding out everything you would (and would not!) want to know about your monitor.

Like all electronics, if you are willing to stretch your budget, you will rarely be dissapointed. The Dell 24" HC edition is supposed to be very good too. I think the 245BW uses the same panel as the 226BW, and I am also happy with my 226BW albeit with the limiitations of TN panels...

It all depends, I did some reading around, thought I would be ok with TN and got a 226BW. After a week of dissapointment I took it back and got a 2007WFP, suffice to say, S-IPS FTW.

Yep, exactly how I ended up with an S-PVA. If I knew about black crush and color shifting back then, I might've steered clear.

Cool I really appreciate the advice. But could someone tell me what all these different panel acronyms mean? Like TN and S-PVA.

at the first page of the display forum there is a sticky that details the differences in the various types of lcd panels, I suggest you browse over it you may find it very helpful in this matter.
