Hi guys, happy to join this great forum, hope to get some answers.
Her's my setup

CPU:
I7 930 Batch 3015A293
Motherboard:
P6X58D-Premium
RAM:
Patriot PVT36G1600ELK
Power Supply:
Antec Quatro 850
Graphics Card:
AsusEAH5850DirectCu2DIS/1g
Hard Drives:

Cooling:
Noctua NH-U12P SE2 1300RPM
Sound:
Stock Motherboard
Case:
Cool Master 690 II
Monitor:
24"Samsung Syncmaster245BW
O/S And Misc Stuff:
Win7 X64 Editio

I lowered both CPU Core to 1.26250 and QPI to 1.21875,I did 20x190 for 3.8 and in LinX I get mostly 80-81 load on the hotter Core.I got only one 84 on one of the passes.HT is off.I have a question on the CPU core and QPI ,I tried 1.3 and temps went up I lowerd and they went down. How low can you safely go,and why do some have to raise it to 1.35 or more?.When I use Prime 95 the temps stay at 77 degrees. And my last question is I reset TIM and put the AS5 in bubble in the middle, but more than pea size should I put grain size or smaller for this sink?Does that really matter?I'm also looking into non conductive paste. Thanks for the help

Looks like your cooler is already close to the limit of keeping your i7-930 stable.

Your voltage looks good.

My experience with the i7-930 is that it doesn't require alot of voltage to over clock but it does require good cooling.

My i7-930 runs much cooler with a modified Corsair H50.

I think you need to do something to improve your cooling. 1.36v. on with my H50 gets too hot for stability.

I run stable 4GHZ with 1.29v.

it's most likely the cooler (though temps do seem quite high for having hyper-threading disabled), I wouldn't expect results like SonDa5 though, haha. qpi/vtt seems a bit low for what you're running your ram at, have you run prime95 blend test overnight to make sure it's stable?

I was running 3.8GHz on a true spirit and getting temps of 72c max after stress testing, I just had to rma my board though because of ram issues so I may get better temps depending on what the problem was.

What method did you use for the Thermal paste and which did you use?I used AS5 and a little bigger than pea size.My case is opened on the side. When I raised the CpuCore to 1.30 my temps were sky high at 85+.I was told to keep lowering thr vcore till I reached instability, well I haven't yet but don't know what's too low,I know what's too high.As far as cooling this cooler works great on some setups,it reviewed pretty good so I got it.Am wondering what could cause the temps to stay high besides cooling, could the chip be slow OC?Thanks

slow OC?

aside from individual differences in the chip it's self, it's possible that the IHS (the metal part that you attach the heatsink to) is making bad contact with the rest of the chip.

Nothing is too low as long as the OC is stable. The i7's vary all over the place, some people get cooler running chips while others get hotter running ones. Your temps do seem high for having HT off most I ever hit on my lapped H50 was 90c at 4.2 with 1.30-1.325 vcore w/HT.

Also what are your ambient temps?

I actually went to Fry's and bought an H50 and some Nano Diamond Thermal Paste(same ingredients as IC7) and with the same set up I still get 48-49 idle and 73-76 Prime95 load.So in my case the Noctua NH-U12P SE2 is identical.I am so curious to why I cannot lower idle at all.Maybe lapping the my sink might do the trick but these( NH-U12P SE2 ) are really shinny don't know how much good it would do.It's got to be the chip it just doesn't run cooler.I'm still at 3.8 with 21X181,CpuCore 1.26250v and Qpi 1.21875V with HT off. Haven't tried to lower the CpuCore anymorelowest I went was 1.25V.I remember on my last setup with the Q6600 quad core I lapped both the chip and the sink and I think temps went lower I wish I documented it.Don't know whatelse to do,I'm going to return the H50 to Fry's since my other cooler is fine but I think I'll use the IC7 clone for paste.

/facepalm

Being shiny has absolutely NO correlation whatsoever to being flat. It just means the manufacturer polished it to look pretty.

An actual test to see whether or not you should lap is to stick the contact area next to a piece of grid paper and get a good reflection. If the lines are as straight as a gay man then you may want to go to your local hardware store and get your much needed sandpaper.

I remembered reading on the LLC and alot of people recommend turning it off due to the spikes in voltage that supposetly shorten the life of the CPU especially on setups that run at 3.5V or higher, apprently you cannot see the spikes unless you use an oscilloscope.Anyways the temps really dropped,I'm now at 4.0 with 21X191 ratio,1.2750V Cpucore,HT off,Pll qpi and a few others on auto,LLC off, temps for the past 2hrs after stating at 48 idle the went to 74 and dropped to about 70,back and forth. And that's with me on the damn thing using it,I have 3 different movies running on three different players,I guess that doesn't require much cpu power.Who knows maybe the new paste did it,breakdown period is shorter then most(doubt it though). did attept to go lower on CpuCore voltage but it kind of froze when trying to restart.I took it down to 21x181 at 3.8 and it stays at 69 degrees.

And I do know about flat surfaces, lapping always improves temps by at least 2-3 +degrees. The shinny surface still looks pretty good on the sink.it is flat but not microscopic flat.Since I don't encode to use the 8 processors I think the LLC can take some time off,if I decide to use it I lower things down and turn it on,no biggy.

so 72c is an ok temp for an i7 920 @ 3.6ghz stock voltage? Cause thats what mine read at.

this was outlined on anandtech some while ago with a pretty logical theory that it couldn't keep up with quick spikes/drops. more recently someone actually tested it using a snap-nn modis’s oscilloscope function and was unable to determine if this actually happens (in other words he was unable to detect any spiking).

I'd say LLC is safe to use for a 24/7 OC , I probably wouldn't use it for extreme benchmarking unless more testing on LLC showed similar results with a more accurate scope though.

i7-920 seems to be "wired" differently than i7-930. Probably better to seek out information you are after by looking for i7-920 information.

well i just added another fan to the rad and turned the case fans up and temps dropped 12c :)

I did 3.8Mhz with Cpucore 1.193V Temps 64degreez load in Prime.HT LLC off.I I go lower the screen freezes.
