My current system is a 6800k, 48gb ram, gtx970, MSI Pro Carbon.

My primary use of this machine is pushing VM's that I do my homework in (coding, writing papers, things that I don't want fucking up my OS....) as well as AutoCAD with about 5% or so gaming and media. Currently dual booting Debian and Windows 10, which is why I prefer to do much of my homework in a VM I can open from both sides. AutoCAD is my primary concern.

I am at the point where the 970 is just starting to not cut it in AutoCAD and I will have to pick up a quadro card. But honestly I think I would also like to get the load of the VM's off my system as well. Not to mention having my system practically locked down while rendering.

I was trying to figure out the best way to go about this. My motherboard has to be replaced. It has been having all kinds of problems since my last case fan controller melted and took some usb ports with it. Honestly thinking of going with a cheaper motherboard since it has to be replaced anway, setting that up with a quadro k5000ish and building a Ryzen system for my dailey driver and the 970. I think Ryzen would handle the multitasking + VM's and such pretty well.

But I could build a mid level server for about the same cost. Especially when you factor in a dual monitor 4k kvm...

What do you guys think?

Well for basically the same price, I can get a quadro M4000 over the K5000. I really would not have thought that. The prices have come down a good bit since I last looked. This is a pretty good thing. Work is pushing me to start Solidworks by next year. We only have one guy that knows it and he is probably not going to stick around.

Edit: Another thing I just noticed. My 6800k does not support ECC. I had just assumed it would since it's a 6c12t 2011v3 socket cpu, but that is in fact not the case.

Ryzen supports ECC, but I cannot find a motherboard that supports ECC ram...
