I need more RAM, or do I?

Take a look at my sig... (put a 9600XT in there instead of that POS, getting tommarrow)

You noticed that I have only 512mb RAM. I will have the money soon, to upgrade that memory to 1GB. I will not upgrade the memory if it doesn't help frame rates.

I know 1GB of RAM will help load times on most games (but I don't mind that, trust me I had 56k), but will it help FPS? If yes, how many FPS on average? (on games like Halo, UT2k4)

1GB of RAM will help ALOT in games like UT2004, BF1942, Halo, and other RAM intesive PC games. A gaming rig with less then 1GB of RAM isn't technically a gaming rig yet hehe.

It wont help frame rates unless you have a swapping problem. If for instance, in the middle of the game a particular part of the level isn't loaded into memory, it will have to swap it out of ram with the harddrive and you will get slow downs from that. If you aren't experiencing these slow downs (you can tell because your harddrive starts clicking away in the middle of the game), then you wont see any improvement in frame rate.

However, with the newer games like UT2K4 and Halo, they are very large memory wise (400-500MB for just the levels), so you would see an improvement for sure in these games. Any newer game that is yet to be released is also going take up lots of memory, so upgrading to 1GB is not a bad idea.

I don't know if I have those problems yet because first of all...

1.) dont have my 9600XT
2.) Only have the demo of UT2k4 and Halo (I had to pay for my 9600XT, I'm broke. :D)

How many games actually use more than the 512mb? Unless your system is using more than 512mb when you're playing the game it won't make a difference at all. I know on my system it takes a game with a really big map or a lot of stuff running to exceed 512mb.

1gb is probably going to help with the newest games out and any that will be coming out in the near future however.
 
Well my FPS is alot better now with 1GB than it ever was with 512MB. Games like Morrowind and BF1942 were very choppy on 512MB. They run near smooth as silk on 1024MB.

Load times are cut way down and overall gameplay smoothness is much better.
