I've been using Windows XP since it came out, but with my new system I thought I would jump to Windows 7.

I bought the Windows 7 Home Premium for system builders. I noticed on the package that it says I will need to obtain some OPK software... When looking into this at microsoft's website I see that this kit appears to be for people that build systems to sell. I just buillt this system for moi. Can I not just do a clean install by inserting the disk and booting from the cd like the good ole days?

If anyone can clear this up for me it would be appreciated. :)

yeah.. just boot off of the dvd and install. Ive done it a few times now with the same Windows 7. Honestly, I never read the package though... probably should... but no problems with activation at all.. working fine here!

Yes, assuming you have the full version, just boot from the disc and install.

What that is considered is key word "OEM" instead of the retail version. Use OEM to search and you can answer all your questions now.

You are fine using a builders version. This is an OEM, and has to stay tied to that motherboard at least , aka "original system" defined by the EULA. I have had builders OEM discs , they are fine, but to make it easiest, get the OPK disc to make it smoother.

However , others on forums have suggested otherwise;

"I downloaded the OPK from Microsoft by registering as a partner and configured the OPK files but the install didn't even seem to read the files on the flash drive and just asked me for all the information again anyway. So I think you can install with just the disk as petrosil suggested."

To make a long story short, you DO NOT need the OPK software to install it. The system builder version is similar to OEM, in that you just don't get support from microsoft.
