I need a video card that will give me enough performence to run doom3 and half life 2 on there best settings. I want it to be able to run future games on there best settings also. I dont want have to keep upgrading my video card every so often does anyone have any suggestions. I have a buget between 250-300 US dollars and my specs are

AMD Athlon Xp 2400+ 2.0GHz
760Mb of ram

With your budget, I'd be looking in the area of radeon x800s or nvidia 6800GT's

My vote goes for X800XL or 6800GT. Best options for what you already have in your system. You could also look for a used 6800 or x800 and get a deal. I might know someone that has one also if you are interested.

Damn that echo....

Oh, and before I get reported for threadcrapping, or 'attacking a user' - This was an attempt at humor.

Believe it or not, we aren't out to curb humor. Preserving users having a good time was one of our stated goals when we were brought in. If we got rid of all of the sarcastic, arrogant smart alecs on this forum, there wouldn't be anybody left :p As long as you aren't deliberately putting down other users, you won't hear from us and you'll have nothing to worry about  - DL

Well he was asking for an opinion so I gave mine. I realize you have already said this before me. But don't you think that the fact he is even asking this question here means that he is looking for re-assurance from a larger audience so that he can make a decision he feels he is happy with. ;)

I would vote for a Leadtek 6800GT. I love mine, and I can run it at over Ultra speeds without a problem.

Yup.. If your willing to shell out $300, see if you can get a deal on an x850xt or xtpe. Keep an eye on newegg. The 6800gt is also a great card.

Although both the X800XL and the 6800GT would be good cards for your rig, if I were you, I would upgrade your mobo and CPU combo first.

That CPU will be a bottleneck and in the long run, I think it would be better for you to upgrade to a PCIe mobo, then a new CPU, then a new GPU.

However, if you're on a tight budget, I guess for the 6800GT since it does have the SM3.0 capability that the X800XL doesn't.
