Ive been in Peru for 2 years and during that time I havent been able to keep up with computer technology. I need a new computer for College but I need help in picking the parts. I will need it mainly for school but I would like it to be able to play whatever game without issues also. I am also not sure if I want a laptop or a normal PC tower. What do you think??
 
My budget would be no more than $2000 buying the parts as cheep as I can over the net.
 
so cal has a good setup, you might want to look into a SFF for that mix between a laptop and a desktop. you cant take it to calls but its small and very portable if you move around alot.

What is an SFF? Im a little ignorant about this stuff now I think.
 
SFF stands for small form factor. its a regular desktop PC ran on more then a micro Mobo. the whole case is about the size of a shoe box giver or take a few inches. http://sys.us.shuttle.com/
there you can make a system from them but i would suget to get a barebone system with the right mainboard for you and then get the rest of the parts off of newegg.

$2000 is quite a large budget, you can build an A64 setup with a next gen video card for that :p
 
The mobiles are a bad idea due to compatibility reasons. Its a throw-up whether any boards will support it, and the A64's run on lower voltages anyways. Actually, you could build a system around an AthlonXP 3200+, which is faster than an A64 2800+ (A64 2800+ benches at about the same speed as an AXP 3000+). However, with a budget that big I'd go...

Athlon64 3200+
Radeon 9800 pro
1 gig ram (OCZ or Corsair, PC3500)
NForce 250gb-chipset motherboard (Epox 8KDA3+)
2x80gb western digital/seagate SATA drives
DVD-RW

Case is up to you. You should probably get a good case without a PSU, and buy that seperate (Antec or Thermaltake PSUs are my choices, at least 410w). Also make sure to use as many fans as your case lets you, which is usually around 4.
 
Hmm. Didn't know there were possible compatibility issues for the mobile A64s. If true, then obviously avoid them by using standard A64 2800+ or A64 3000+.

Note that the IDEQ uses an nForce3 150 chipset, so overclocking options will be extremely limited. But I went for space conservation and decent stock performance given the stated application, not [H]ardcore overclocking potential.

If you want the best of both worlds, maybe go for http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=56-150-010&DEPA=1 as the system basis, since it uses the nForce3 250 chipset.
